Despite it's a city, it was not completely choked in urban concrete "jungle" as how it's now. We got used to walking around the forest even in the dark and it was ordinary for us. We were living with wildlife, I even got used to seeing bears around. I was just so used to walking within 10 KM radius that kids now hardly can bother walking for 100 meters lol. Now I can hardly see birds. Also back then people had no sense of "babysitting". Most of kids either had one parent or both parents works. So we were coming to home alone, return our home alone and then either play alone or with few other kids if they are available while we waited our parent(s) to return by spending most of our lives outside. We got used to being alone and it was a normal thing. It made us explore city and find abandoned buildings. Which kid in my generation never found an abandoned building and it was their own "secret base" they loved to hang out all alone? Sometimes you could find "extraordinary places" in cities. Imagine in the middle of nowhere pass a jungle you could find a half-finished abandoned malls. Inside of it you could find wild animals. Now I keep hearing how parents are so concerned. They tend to hire or arrange a babysitter for even their 15 years old kid lol. The kid just plays games or dance on Tiktok all day at home so IDK why he would need to be taken care of. Now there are popular services for riding kids to school to home (this is what Americans were mostly used to but I never went to America in my life, we didn't have American life). Helicopter parenting was a thing but now it seems 80% of parents are helicopter parents lol. In that context I can understand kids has no opportunity to be alone now, then they grow up not used to being alone so even when they are 30 years old they may be still scared to be alone. Then they would use smartphones to watch Tiktok videos of people dancing to distract themselves lol. [/QUOTE]
