Why is the OG Xbox so underrated.

Is it though? I feel like it was consistently super popular even back in the day, just not the immediate #1.
Almost all my friends had one, except me who mained PS2 back then.

Never was, its the defacto console for multiplatform games imo
Yeah was just gonna say, I was always really jealous of friends who owned the Xbox version of a multiplat game because they were so gorgeous and always loaded lightning fast.

people will just say anything, huh? i had an xbox i bought second-hand and i was really bummed i couldn't keep it because it had a 1st gen disc drive and games would completely randomly just crash. my brother lost a ton of progress in kotor repeatedly to this (his fault for not saving frequently.) it would happen either early on or hours into a play session.

It is? Never thought it was
No, I would say it is. Among younger generations (those who were born around 1997 onward) the original XBox’s legacy has been very much tainted. It’s the least desired system of its generation at used game stores, which hurts because it really is a spectacular box. Even in the modern day, it’s not the king of the mods anymore, losing that crown to the Wii and 3DS.

Anyway, when I got my box in the early 2020’s, I couldn’t believe what I had missed out on all these years. Special bonus features, custom soundtracks, super fast loading from the HDD, and a bevy of comparatively cheap exclusives that are phenomenal. For all those who can’t afford the PS2 and GameCube market, the original Xbox is a fantastic console of the period in need of love! Shoutouts to the Blinx games for being my under-loved favorites!

And this is another part of the reason behind original XBox not getting the love it deserves: unreliability. By far, it’s the most unreliable system of the period. The best bet is to get a system from right before the 1.6 motherboards if you want to mod it, but my system is past that and has never done me wrong. Regardless, it’s important to remember: you’re playing with early 2000’s PC parts, so be open to performing maintenance if you need to.

I'm not sure I totally agree, but even so, it definitely wasn't back then.
The Xbox was so popular (at the very least in the US and Europe) that Microsoft kinda transformed into a gaming juggernaut overnight. All their previous attempts (like Internet Gaming Zone or MSN) look quaint in comparison.

You can really tell which was a system who’s development was helmed by people who actually cared about making a cool games machine and which initiatives were just Microsoft going “we need to make money in this space of technology!”

It’s even more noticeable when the people who made XBox left the company and were replaced by suits with no attachment to the project as anything more than a product in the Microsoft ecosystem.

I loved everything about the OG Xbox. It was so big and chunky, it was a graphical powerhouse, it launched with a built-in hard drive meaning games received DLC and you didn't need a memory card, the online was unmatched in the console space, etc. Consoles nowadays seem pretty boring, whereas the Xbox had attitude. I remember first booting it up and hearing the eerie noises the dashboard made that gave me Y2K/early 2000's vibes.

As a kid, or even an adult, how could you not be excited by the Best Buy ad below?

You're not wrong there!
I do love my OG Xbox. Didn't get one for myself until like 2014 for 20 bucks, but it became my main way of playing 6th gen games until I started emulating PS2 stuff last winter.

The funny thing is when I first saw one, I wasn't even shocked by its size or anything. It was a nice amount of chunk. Where things got out of hand was the ps3 for me.

The Xbox is a weird system, because I think most people think it was pretty great, but also it has the cheapest modern used market of the consoles from that gen by far despite PS2 selling the most units.

But I don't think it's underrated. Hell, XBMC was such a legendary modded dashboard it's still around today as Kodi, and Xbox is still kind of known as the house that Halo built.

From what i suppose PS2 got all the attention and most of games unfortunately. A pity indeed. Specially when we see that Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2 were ported from this system to PC i believe mostly because the GFX of Xbox were the best.

Btw, i hope we'll see Xbox's games here soon, i want to see those MUCH MORE than PSVita.

Thats very true , Brother of the original green X .

This thing is a powerhouse on its own and its exclusives are really great Classics on their own . Very experimental and in some cases weird and obscure but really awesome collection of games that only an Xbox can run it . For multiplat-games its even the best choice to play .

The japanese developed games are in itsself very interesting while the Japan only games are another thing that makes the console stand-out . While the Ps2 has its sheer huge quantity of gems and awesome games on their own , the Classic Xbox was the best entry into console gaming in that Gen for its funky exclusives-library but even for its cancled Games and especially its tech .

The Xbox 360 is badass too but the Classic Xbox is the definition of the experimental western gaming in its peak .

I can say at least for myself that I have many fond memories playing the first two Halo titles over friends houses. I didn't actually get an Xbox for myself until after the gen was over, but even so Ninja Gaiden Black instantly became one of my all time favorite games. It's also how I first played Burnout 3 and Knights of the Old Republic, and a few years ago I actually managed to get a bunch of friends together for a Halo 2 LAN party with 2 boxes and 8 players.

I really love the vibe of this machine, the mix of both green and black always comes out pretty good.
I also wanna try Jet Set Radio Future and Panzer Dragoon Orta so bad.

Orta's pretty great. Bosses are kinda damage spongey though. Overall I still prefer Zwei. Jet Set Radio Future I just couldn't get into. I do love the original Jet Grind Radio, but Future's progression structure is just totally different.

Outrun 2 though, now that was a Sega game on the Xbox I played endlessly.

I want Xbox when I was a kid but the problem is is not available in my local game store only Nintendo Playstation and Sega. Xbox isn't popular at that time they where rare but at least in Xbox 360 is selling by that store but I doing have money this time

(To be honest I was thinking about emulating Xbox but if my pc has a right spec though)

I'm inclined to agree. It may not have had the expansive library that the PS2 had, but this console had plenty of good hits to play on it:
-Star Wars KOTOR
-Doom 3
-Jade Empire
-Halo 1 and 2
-Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth
-Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
-The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
-Ninja Gaiden Black
-Otogi
-Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders

And these were just a few of XBOX ONLY games.

The online was pretty good for its time, four controllers were supported, and the xbox ports of games from that era looked and performed a little better as well. Doesn't trump the PS2 by any means, but this console is definitely underrated.

Xbox Original? I don't know why. Maybe because most of the games were multiplatform, with the exception of some series that were sports or in other specific genres of interest to many but by no means all players? I still have a working console, I very rarely run it at past and today because everything that interests me is also on the PC. I bought it for Halo the only exclusive (only 2 years) needed for me, I think I'm not the only one. Most of the exclusives, of which there weren't that many, didn't become them as a result. I don't think this console is bad, but it was especially good for those who don't have and don't need a full-fledged Windows computer.

Not true! Some of the games you listed were not XBOX exclusives initially and released earlier or simultaneously on PC, and some of the others stopped being them fairly quickly in same year or one year later (SW KOTOR, DOOM 3, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind) and some others got PC releases at modern days.
So that black box thing is console or just cheap PC? I joke of course. :) I have it and don't regret.

The problem for me is that the almost REST of the exclusives thats were not included in your list were of little interest personal to me :( not at the time of their release on Xbox, and even more so now)
P.S. Playing Morrowind on XBOX is PAIN - the controls in the game were CLEARLY designed for a PC (keyboard and mouse) and the controls for gamepad that was bolted to the XBOX release that came out LATER was very inconvenient.
