Way, way, way too many Japanese films that I've watched this summer to mention but I want to specifically highlight Tokyo Heaven (1990) and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (1983).
Both really represent something special that can be created with simple cinematography and not too complicated stories.
Whilst the latter is features much more obvious editing, transitions and special effects that remind me of 70's Doctor Who (positively speaking), Tokyo Heaven has a lot of beautiful scenery and shots throughout which I think contrasts so well with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and its own visual identity.
