The Nintendo 64 is a cool console and I want to talk about it after sort of rediscovering my interest in it lately.

For many of us, it was among the first times we saw real-time 3D graphics, which has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on many a gamer, and the muddy graphics and warm sounds now evoke memories of a simpler time for many of us. And while it's a system with a comparatively small library of games, and lots of them were deemed more "family friendly" than libraries of its competitors, there are lots of iconic and timeless classics to be enjoyed and to have grown up with. It had a strange, alien controller that, if anything, is definitely iconic nowadays, and a neat relic of how 3D games were still a new and weird concept.

Whether you've been playing since 1996, or you just recently discovered it through the magic of (still pretty janky) emulation—what are your favorite memories of the N64?

I played a lot of n64 when I was a kid but probably one of my favourite memories is when I used used to play GoldenEye with my siblings and cousins. Sometimes we played what we called the boss game. We'd setup a game in the bathroom level with golden guns. Then one person got to be 'the boss' who got to pickup a golden gun. Then the others had to listen to 'the boss' and do things like paint the walls with the paintball mode and stuff like that but the other people would always be ready to try and take the golden gun and become the boss themselves. We'd have hours of fun playing that or other stupid littles games we made up to make the games more interesting or exciting.

We tried to do it with perfect dark but the weapon placements in that version of the facility level made it less fun.

Yeah a great console. I can remember when I was a teenager I asked my parents for one of these for my birthday but they bought me a Playstation for whatever reason. Well I thought, then some time later I bought the Pokemon Special Pikachu Nintendo 64 edition man I loved that thing. Yes a fantastic console the Nintendo 64!

My most beloved memory from that console is when a friend called me and told me his mother was going to bring him Zelda Ocarina of Time in the evening the very same day it was released here. I went running to his home and while we waited we were talking about Zelda stuff and reading some Nintendo magazines.

End of story, his mother came back pretty late, we only could play for like 1h before I had to go back home, but we saw the intro like 20 times first lol.

That was epic.

We used to do something similar in Banjo Tooie when we played the GoldenEye clone minigame. One of us played Grunty while the others played as Jinjos. Scared us half to death whenever the gigantic Grunty player turned a corner and had a billion health and just started blasting.

The N64, as I’ve said in a couple other threads, was able to avoid total PlayStation annihilation by falling back on what made it unique. It’s very toy like. I think that’s a net benefit for the console, as it gives the system itself, let alone its software, an inherently nostalgic appeal.

It’s like a thick plastic slide at that old playground you used to go to as a kid, only in video game form.

I remember many a day of local multiplayer rowdy action and a bit foul play(Like giving your worse controllers to your "friends" or making strange noises during high concentration moments). While I don't remember very fondly, the "art of stick rotation" many a hands have been suffered greatly.
In terms of one player action, The Goemon games and Aidyn Chronicles, especially the bog and Shamzuk's tower, there is a lot of nice areas and details on these locations, like Like "the church", the laboratory or Elisheva's tomb.

WHERE MY STAR WARS EPISODE 1 RACER FANS AT?!

(First game I had for this system. Play it on Dreamcast now, but I’ll never forget the sheer speed and fear of my first time playing on N64)

I never had a really one but I play the games on my old pentuim with project 64! I finished a lot of games again and again on it.
Does anyone else remember Donald duck game which you get costume from extra levels?
I love it because of it size and great games.
Great console to me(*jack show me a picture from Xbox 360*)
.....so you choose death!

Goin Quackers?

I only played the first two worlds and lost interest. So I wouldn't know about the last boss.

Every time I replay OOT it blows me away. I think it really is a 10/10 and I prefer 2d Zelda usually.

Pokémon stadium 2 is the best Pokémon spinoff ever. The announcer still plays in my head to this day

I think Diddy Kong racing has the best single player mode for a cart racer, but CTR is close.

The N64 library might be small but it’s got bangers

I should find that game for my Dreamcast.
I use DC for most fifth gen multiplats nowadays, but I’ll get other consoles’ versions if there’s something about them which draws me to them.

Like Quake 2 on N64. Plop in an expansion pak and prepare to be blown away at how good it looks compared to the base cartridge.

I won't spoil it so. You didn't miss much, game were fun but on emulator....it was a true chaos! I always was ready for a crash or crazy things.

How does a simple game like Ocarina of Time blows you away?

How does a simple game like Ocarina of Time blows you away?
You say simple....so you didn't collect all the items and story part right?
you know I don't like princess but saria....Ganon you enter wrong house now!
How sad some part where. The guy turn to stalfos....that monster runner who was a cheater on God mode reach the place before you.....
Ah God I want to play it again.....I know it is 3 or 4 times but I want it.
I collect every single items! Stroy side quest....everythings

It’s more than the sum of its parts. From the soundtrack and the atmosphere and the impressive cinematic cutscenes for the time, I’m so impressed it was made on the n64

I’ve done it once to say that I have but I probably never will again lol. It can be fun to search for them though!

I heard of people holding their controllers up to their mouth and pretending to play them like an actual ocarina.

Star Fox 64 is still the peak Star Fox and I won't hear any arguments to the contrary.
Won’t get an argument from me here! It’s one of my favorites for the system.

Tons of secrets, stages, spoken dialogue, incredible rumble, and a banger multiplayer mode make this a gem that you MUST PLAY!
I’ll have to see if I like the Panzer Dragoon games better, but dang. I love rail shooters so much and I miss them so bad…

That said, the open levels in 64 aren’t very fun. I feel this way about Rogue Squadron as well: I’d prefer a short but well thought out rail shooter level to a long, drawn out aerial arena battle any day. I always try to avoid “All Range Mode” stages as much as possible while playing Star Fox 64 lol
