Onimusha
Giants Citizen Kabuto
Ico
Shadow of Colossus

SoulCalibur 1, 2, 3, but if hardware PS2 get 3, it has the best single-player content, most movesets and a CAS system. It's also badly emulated and wasn't ported anywhere so not like you can play it on other platforms.

Also Kengo & sequel, Sword of the Samurai, it's a mix of realistic sword-fighting game (former developers of Bushido Blade) and an RPG where you level character, unlock and set up custom moves, it's one of those games that's ageless and are enjoyable whenever for a quick run.

Onimusha is amazing, best ones are 2, 3 and Dawn of Dreams, the last one has co-op if you're interested. It's something between Devil May Cry and Resident Evil, and you can't go wrong with Capcom games of that generation.

You got Tekken 5 in the list, and Tekken 4 is hit or miss, but I highly recommend Tekken Tag Tournament, it has tons of content but more importantly it's a CD game, which means it takes very little space (because it doesn't have FMV endings), so you got TONS of characters for little wasted hard drive.

From things other people recommended, I second Chaos Legion and Dynasty Warriors 3-6 (PS2 version of 6 is unique and good), add Samurai Warriors 1 & 2 too. All these are slashers. So depends entirely if you like mowing down hordes of enemies.

In terms of general titles, my taste is really basic - I don't know that many hidden gems on the system, but in case you haven't got them:

The Ratchet and Clank Series - still in my view the best 3D platformers of that generation
Shadow of the Colossus and Ico - No intro needed I imagine
Black - one of the stronger console FPSs of that period, with fantastic sound design
Okami - I've only just started playing this, but the brush mechanics are unique
The Splinter Cell games and Psychonauts probably have their most definitive versions on the Xbox, but they also are good on this system. If you haven't played them, I think they're worth the hard drive space.

Finally, and maybe this is just nostalgia talking - but Enter the Matrix is actually pretty fun for a licensed game

If you like beat-'em-ups at all and you like doing sick-ass loops, you need Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance.

If you want something more Yakuza-esque and story-driven, there's Urban Reign.

Just finished beatdown the other day

Hi there, how's it going? I've played a lot of PS2 games, and I wanna second a bunch of games that people have recommended. The Titles I've bolded I especially recommend.:

Jak 2 and 3
The Suffering and The Suffering: Ties That Bind

.Dot Hack Series(the first one anyways, no idea on the second one.)
Silent Hill 2 and 3
Siren
Kuon
Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria
Xenosaga Episode 1
Final Fantasy 10 Undub

Final Fantasy 12 IZJS
Kingdom Hearts 1
Onimusha

Fatal Frame 1 (no idea on the rest of the series.)
Zone of the Enders
King's Field IV and Shadow Tower Abyss

Ico
Shadow of Colossus

Dynasty Warriors 3-5
Dragon Quest 8

Dark Cloud
Ratchet and Clank 1 (no idea on the rest of the series.)
The Warriors
Bully
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
3 hidden gems that I discovered recently:

Ring of Red: - a part turn-based, part real-time mecha/military strategy game with simulation elements set in a alternate history where Japan didn't surrender after the US Nuked Hiroshima, and so WW2 never ended.

7 Blades: The most fun PS2 game. Just play as the woman that's the gun bunny, the man who's a samurai isn't fun to play as.

Growlanser 2 (first game in the Growlanser Generations collection): God-Tier RTS-RPG. Play this, you're missing out!
