i've started my first 2 or 3 hours of soul hackers and i have some thoughts the music and stuff are obviously enjoyable to listen to i like the aesthetics of the game it really seems like the definition of the futuristic 90s thing i've heard people talk about i don't really know what is going on much though the other characters are okay while nemissa is my favorite and i definitely just like her for normal reasons and don't have a crush on her anyway lastly the combat which feels a bit slower but in a good way compared to press turn and one more by planning out everyone's moves or skills they do on my turn before watching it all play out although i trouble recruiting demons i love seeing the silly dialog while negotiating with them and i love when the dialog is strange like in games i played when i was younger like undertale and earthbound although i don't like that demons don't get xp unlike the later games which i don't like throwing away older stuff because of the newer option just being objectively better although that's more of a nitpick with the series in general and the game feels like a good entry point to something more like mainline smt so i'm not constantly getting killed by slimes and pixies and that's all i have to say

i hope this wasn't too bad since this is my first time making something like this

Hmm. I wonder if you do/had like Shin Megami Tensei II. Not so similar games, yet they have very similar taste beyond being part of the same franchise. Like playing Persona 4 and then liking Tokyo Xanadu eX+ due to similar taste despite how different games they are.

For example having conversations with demons and even make them cry to make them run away to end the battle without anyone attacks or take damage was why I loved Persona 1 more than I should lol. It's sad to see they removed this core gameplay in the rest of the series. Persona 5 would be very fitting for that feature but even in that game they ignored it.

Imagine ordering a party member to hiphop dance to a demon just so it would fear "what the hell you do human" and they run away saying "damn humans are way scarier than I thought" was epic comedy gold in turn based game history lololol.

I had picked this up for the 3DS during the very brief time that I owned the handheld. I've always liked the Cyberpunk genre (saw Blade Runner at a young age, and it just stuck) and am a fan of many RPGs with that setting that have been released over the years. As fate would have it, I had recently broken my foot in the local skatepark after a shift at work (wheeeee...) and was looking for something new to occupy my time while I recovered.

In short, I didn't get too far in the game, but I did like it! One of the first dungeons had some sort of zodiac-themed puzzles, if memory serves me right...? I remember getting kinda hung up on that part. But I got a little further than that before I called it quits. I didn't think the game was an all-time classic, but did think it was pretty good for what it was.

Really, I just kept thinking that I would rather play it on a console! I was aware of the Saturn version - as well as Devil Summoner - based on some articles I had read in older gaming magazines. Likely GamePro or Game Players, given their regular coverage of import games. In fact, that's part of what had drawn me to the 3DS release in the first place, as I had read about it decades earlier and remembered the name as soon as I saw it.

I'm always ever-hopeful that the Saturn / PS1 version gets a complete translation, someday 🤞 🤞
