Luckily I beat the original, why is always, ALWAYS with these "Deluxe" or "Improved" hackroms a load of bolony, a bunch of changes, some good, some probably nobody asked for, in such a pretence starting rom the name to just being a difficulty hack.

I know I don't have to play it, but while I cannot put my finger on it exactly we have tons of such hackroms and that forget the most important part: Being actually fun.

Am I the only one?
The OG was play-tested and designed by Nintendo. The gameplay balance, sense of challenge, progress and fun is kinda what made Nintendo so OP for so long. I think this game design philosophy itself is a large part of what makes these games so compelling years later and makes people want to add creatively to it. Thing is, it's often bungled. Take Mother 2 deluxe. I love the extra content but the challenge is ABSURD. IMO, Content should not be gated behind challenge without a good reason or a good payoff. Is it worth that? Kinda. I really appreciate the new content but the game feels so bogged down getting to the extra content. The added challenge isn't really meaningful and the content isn't really sufficient "reward" to put yourself through a game that is now essentially incredibly unbalanced in terms of challenge and progression to the point that it becomes frustrating. I still really like it tho.

Anyone have a good breakdown in the differences between this and MaternalBound Redux?
AFAIK:
MaternalBound Redux:
Improved Equipment menu
Improved Controls:
  • A/L button: Talk to people or check object (You won’t get the “No problem here” message anymore)
  • X button: Opens up the main game menu (Goods, Equip, etc)
  • B button: Open up HP/PP boxes and cash-on-hand window
  • Y button: Run when held down
  • Start button: Opens/Closes up the map
Decensored Text without trying to make it their own
Poo's Mirror is swapped to Transform... still sucks
Overworld monsters has unique sprites
Some sprites fit the clay models
New names in the "Don't Care" prompt
Obvious Mother 2 translated title screen
Diagonal sprites
Running akin to always using Skip Sandwich binded to Y
Named characters has their name in their text boxes

Mother 2 DX

There's also the 3rd wing of hack world: a "retranslation" re-write that says it re-wrote many lines but fails to document or explain what the stylistic reasoning or changes actually were, never giving a single example of a before/after sentence, but going on for 4,000 lines in the Readme about the item names and proper nouns that were changed, but the rampant dialog changes remain a mystery despite being the primary artistic bulk and spirit of the entire game.

Iromhackers often gravitate towards two types of project to stand out: The "ultimate" hacks (Mega Ultra Super Duper Pokémon Fire Red retranslated with 9999+ rebalanced pokémon, all regions, a new font and anime cameos) and the "hard type" hacks (Mario 1 but it's borderline kaizo and had zero playtesting but it's okay because you're just bad at it).
i genuinely want to play that hypothetical pokemon hack you just described

Holy cow this is incredibly hard. I suppose I could spam Shield and/or grind for hours, but really, I walk into Twoson, and a balding old man kills me in three hits, and I scored at least seven on him, and he's still alive?

I know I could have picked an easier difficulty, but there's some sort of 'optional content' that is locked out then. Why would the mod devs do that? Disgusting.

Also really not a fan of changing the names to, I assume, be more 'accurate' of a translation.
...it's their content, besides, there are plenty of paid games doing the same thing.

You need to be strategic, crafty and all that. The Halloween hack by toby fox was worse about it iirc.

Do agree about the names, though it doesn't bother me as much.

Mother 2 - Perfect Edition v1.53
MaternalBound-Redux v1.1
Mother 2 Deluxe v3.0

Which one is the best? Comments lean slightly towards MaternalBound, but I still can't tell.
This, imo. There's some drama about maternalbound stealing from this, but I'd rather not think about it.

The easiest mode of this hack should be basically perfect edition with a new coat of paint and a more accurate translation, your mileage may vary.

There's also a casual version of the mod or so I heard, so that would be appreciated for people who don't want to grind for days.

Is there any way to put a summary of what the rom hack does without the entire set of patch notes? I can still download this and check the zip file obviously but that would add a lot of server load if I was downloading PS2 games just to see what the hacks do. I do like the idea of the declutter though, some entries in the repo are really hard to navigate because of all the patch notes.

"RB's Notes: Changelog now contained inside the archive to decluter this entry. Whenever possible, I will add changelogs as plain text files inside archives, unless the number of changes is small enough to add here."

This, I appreciate. Thanks man. I screenshot and save the webpages myself too just for archive purposes - and probably still will out of habit but, a boon nonetheless.

Thanks, man!
I appreciate that you keep up with updates so well, really saves people the trouble of checking all the time! ::thumbsupwario

It used to be a lot worse, difficulty can be chosen now.

It's the difference between a romhack and an indie game. The former cannot escape from comparisons as it's ultimately an edit, so romhackers often gravitate towards two types of project to stand out: The "ultimate" hacks (Mega Ultra Super Duper Pokémon Fire Red retranslated with 9999+ rebalanced pokémon, all regions, a new font and anime cameos) and the "hard type" hacks (Mario 1 but it's borderline kaizo and had zero playtesting but it's okay because you're just bad at it).

Every once in a while there's one that feels on par with the original experience (difficulty wise) while adding just enough new stuff to spice up the experience. Aria of Sorrow Alter comes to mind.

Same question here, although I was not consider that "maternal" one, as I didn't know about its existence.
Someone there, let us know.
for I recall the perfect edition is just a troll version of Earthbound. And Deluxe is for seasoned players. So maternalbound wins by default.
