Anyone else do this back in the day? I'd tell people I'd done it and they wouldn't believe me. Sucks to be them ig, lul.

The data structure is nearly identical from the Xbox to PC version (makes sense since this was the DIRECTXbox). .ESM and .ESP's that had their files loaded loosely in subdirectories.
I had gotten my dad to pay some other guy to get my xbox modchipped. This lead to me plugging in an ethernet cable from my xbox to my pc to see if I could direct read the xbox hard drive.

IIRC, it was actually quite a bastard to get the connection set up and configured (on what was probably windows 2000? XP? at the time) but once it was done it was quite literally as simple as a drag and drop your modded gamefiles to the xbox's temporary storage folder. This did mean that if you booted up another game that wrote to temporary storage that they would erase whatever was still there. however i primarily played Morrowind so this wasn't a big issue for me lol

Did anyone else have experience modding Morrowind on the original Xbox, or similarly had some experience of interacting with modchipped Xbox's back in the day? Fun times.

I tried playing morrowind a couple times. After Oblivion. And I ragequit every time because of the way combat worked. You could swing your weapon at the enemy with perfect alignment and not hit.

yeah, that is the general predominant opinion of those who try to go backwards from Oblivion or Skyrim to Morrowind.

it wasn't intended as a flex but ig you right if you think it is something to flex over, yeah i was a cooler kid than u

I mean, was that PC that you needed anyway so potato that it couldn't morrowind?

I wasn't aware that Xbox Morrowind could be modded. But it's not surprising due to the similar file structure, as you already explained. That's neat.

Similarly, a modded Nintendo Switch can play with mods in Skyrim. I don't think very many mods were made for that version, however.

I messed around with modding it a lot at the time. It was very hit-and-miss as many of the mods would slow the game down to where it was almost unplayable, or make it crash.

However as I recall I did get some mods to work. I just got out my modded Xbox and was thinking about trying out more game mods for Morrowind and Knights of the Old Republic.

The fast travel spoiled me from Oblivion. I played that first about a year after it came out. IT was my first TES game. I tried getting into Morrowind, but can't play without a fast travel mod. It was a good evolution of the series.

Reminds me of modding the game back 2012 when i was making tools to help mod the game.

Regardless, if you can replace the esp/esm files i would like to hear how it goes. I do recall there being.... something... different between them that moving modded files didn't necessarily work (or was that attempting to transfer the saves?).

Alas just doesn't feel like it's worth the effort today. Gave up on Morrowind a long time ago.

I finally played Morrowind recently, if you mod spells to give uber acrobatics, you can jump crazy distances. You can also kinda fast travel via those giant insects and some boats. Ultimately, I stopped playing because of the game (especially annoying DLC) not having quest markers. It's really neat how you can break the game with magic and alchemy. Definitely get the Skywind fan remake when it comes out.
