It made me dislike the term metroidvania, because it reinforces the idea that "true" Metroid games have to be open-ended. And on that note, Metroid Other M is surprisingly a pretty good game. I avoided it for 15 years because the fanbase absolutely despises it. I regret believing them. The gameplay is fun, the atmosphere is great, and a linear Metroid is NOT a bad thing. Forcing you to stand still in first-person to fire missiles introduces a neat risk/reward system. Could do without the pixel searching sections though. As for the much detested story, it's passable. Certainly not great, but I think people overreacted. They hated the idea of Samus having emotions, being anything but a badass bounty hunter that took orders from nobody. It could have been executed better but I appreciate wanting to give Samus a little depth. Oh yeah, requiring authorization to use your Varia Suit when you're burning to death was dumb. However! Did stupid logic irreparably damage my experience? Of course not. The game's solid. [/QUOTE]
