Mark Zuckerberg's Announcement Today. / Where would VR Gaming with Oculus Be If It Were Never Aquired?

I am not going to post his announcement here, but if you are aware of it or going to check it out for yourself. Does this change anything for you without getting in the mud just a
'Yes I want to use these products more now.'
'No I do not want to use these products more now.'

For me its a no and being from the ground floor with myspace its been a little bit of a growing pain because when done well it can be very fun, but at least any old school style forums like these that are still around still provide the same kind of fun in a better way.

This is not like an ad I am generally curious as a netizen.

Just as a side note, so I won't have to make another meta thread again. Could you imagine where VR Gaming would be if Mark kept his filthy mitts off of Oculus? We can safely have that discussion here.

So no, this wont make me want to use their products. But if we assume for argument's sake that he's being honest about their intentions and motivations (Big IF) then I'm glad to see it.

I'm sorry it didn't require a discussion on the contents within I'm a little surprised he uttered some words in the formations that he did. I really think they took for granted the userbase they had to be so willing to have open discussions before it got to the state its currently in and I just think its like a classic monkey paw curling. Its a nice marketplace sometimes, but thats about it for me. I do have one because my family harrasses me when I dont only to pretend I don't exist when I do.

Not sure we can even really discuss the core topic without getting into politics...actually, I can make one point that isn't directly about electoral politics at least:

I think removing fact-checking is (also) about creating more permissive environment for AI trash posts? I just looked at Facebook, that's allllll I get on there is inscrutable bot content. Real weird shit, lots of it with a political bent. I imagine they get that reported constantly, or are constantly asked to do something about it, and this is just washing their hands of the effort.

I personally felt like tying the meta profiles to the oculus wasn't the best move, but its a DRM world now. Their vrchat project left a lot to be desired from the outside looking in.

i think most people nowadays use it to hang out with people that they can't physically hang out with. you don't need to be fancy or high tech to enjoy hanging out with friends/family/and random people on the internet.

Unless I'm mistaken, isn't Oculus (or whatever they're calling the Meta VR thing now) still considered the best VR headset? I have zero interest in that space, but I guess if you do, you can't really complain.

it's affordable, portable and it has competent performance/graphics.

Nah, I was never taken by the concept of VR. Being limited to first person perspective means you're forced to leave out a ton of genres. Maybe playing Doom in VR would be cool but certainly not worth-the-price-of-admisson-cool for me. Oculus being tied to Zuck only serves to further discourage me from trying it.

I could see it working wonders for *ahem* *adult applications* though.
