Welcome.

I play a bit of commander. My current strongest is Estrid:The Masked.

Please discuss MTG.

I knew people who were into it and I always wanted to learn the game myself, but I remember the cards going for really high prices (no cheap, knockoff cards like Yu-Gi-Oh!, only the official thing sold by retailers like Camelot) and the rules feeling a bit scary to learn.

Still, I think it's the coolest-looking thing out there.

Oh yeah. There's a 'Reserve List' that WoTC said they'd never ever reprint, so those cards are insanely expensive.

You can still totally play on a budget. If you have a good table, people will have decks that match your power level and stuff.

The rules are pretty simple. It's card interactions and weird stack stuff you have to keep track of. At base it's not too difficult, it's just learning how everything fits together. I play with a table that's very experienced and we still run into rules questions.

You could try Magic the Gathering Arena. You´ll get a few Standarddecks for free and you can get Boosters for Gold, which you can earn by playing.
If you like Final Fantasy, the Crossover starts tuesday

I don't have much experience with mtg online. I think I played one draft and maybe two leagues during lorwyn standard, to try it out. It's not as fun online imo, and it is expensive, if you are not a competitive player. I think about making a new account from time to time because ::heart mtg and would like to play again, but I was never that competitive and just liked to make budget decks to play with friends ::sadkirby For example, I couldn't afford ravnica dual lands at the time (lol forget about actual fetch lands/duals) so I would make base green decks that uses into the north + cold snap snow lands if I wanted a "fast" multicolor deck.

Posting my favorite MTG art and flavor text cards of all time.
I have a planar chaos damnation! Only have one though ::sadkirby Also one of my favorite cards of all time is Phyrexian Arena (you can tell how much use it got over the years ^_^), the effect goes so well with the flavor text, it is beautiful! That makes me like the 8th (and 9th?) printing over Urza. The flavor on Urza is good too, but you kind of have to know the story to really "get" that one.

Phyrexian arena text goes hard. MTG text gives me DS vibes. Just a sentence explains so much.

This thread is making me go through my cards ::heart
Phyrexian arena text goes hard.
Ashenmoor gouger is another of my favorites as far as flavor text, really sad ::sadkirby Loved putting this brutal dude in my aggressive B/R decks.

Eh, I would disagree, I think it's keywords that are intimidating. The stack is not too difficult to understand (since they went back to 6th ed rules where combat no longer uses it years ago) and a few games is enough to understand how it works. I have a none mtg friend, interested in the final fantasy set, and wanted to know what some card did and it had the keyword "proliferate" with no reminder text. Yes, it's not hard to understand the effect, but my worry is since I stopped playing (around shards) now you are expected to know a lot of keyword abilities.

I probably had a collection of cards worth over $1k and ended up giving it all away to my cousin's kid. I got tired of tripping over the tube filled with cards and even had an unopened commander deck of that 5 color dragon deck I never bothered to open which think it was going for $300 sealed on ebay at the time :P Me and my friends used to play a lot, started during Alara Reborn with the 60 card format, ended up going into EDH format a few years later before Wizards coined it as Commander. I still have like 8 commander decks I kept just in case I ever want to play again. My cousin's kid was in college playing with friends in MTG and just didn't have that many cards or funds to really have options and figured it why not just let him have fun while he's still young with this collection that is just collecting dust and getting in my way :P Trying to think which commander deck I have that is my favorite. Probably my five color deck

Daily favorite card:

Counterflux is really cool because it has the 'can't be countered' rules text. It's super useful against spell slinger decks that want to slap a ton of effects on the stack. You can just say 'no'.

Also the 'you don't control' is hugely useful if you also have a bunch of effects on the stack that you want to resolve. Overloading Counterflux won't fizzle your own spells!

It's a bit harder to cast because of the double pips in its cost, but it's well worth it if you're running an Izzet deck.

I have never played EDH, but it looks fun. Maybe I'll make one deck for fun.
Ooh
So my favorite card is banned in every format!

Favorite for flavor? That's fair because if you know the arabian nights story it is a pretty cool and unique effect, and the art is ::fire. But if you like it in practice ::sadkirby Long games can be fun, but I would just get pissed if someone played shahrazad against me :loldog I wonder what type of deck could abuse shahrazad ::thinking

It's only on the ban list since it contains traces of MTG's gambling origins/mechanics if you notice it mentioning Ante. Wizards wants to distance itself from gambling so banned all cards that related to it

I thought it was banned purely for tournament logistics? It makes games too long. Yes, it mentions ante, but I think the ante cards had already been banned before shahrazad was. I'm not a mtg historian though >_<

Ok, brushed up on my history and shahrazad was banned at the same time as the ante cards (I was wrong on that), but it was "separate" because (like I thought) it does not explicitly use ante: it was banned for tournament reasons. Besides being an incredibly annoying card, so it should be banned for that alone, I think the way to abuse it would be to play a deck like dredge or something that is strong game 1, but becomes much more vulnerable post sideboarding and draw game 2 due to time.
