I don't exactly remember when it started, but I do know that it's something I've been engrossed in for the last few years; it's a style I just click with. I wasn't born in that time period, but I grew up with a Wii in a house that still used box TVs, and then way later on I'd eventually get into anime.Anime was something that was always with me; I just never realized it until the pandemic, and once I did, I dove straight into a world that was very unfamiliar to me but very different and engaging, and I'm assuming my past and my new love for anime led me down the path of loving this era of titles.

Any time I find a series, I usually end up falling more in love with its past. I remember finding Fate/Stay Night, and only a few weeks later I'd be engrossed in its older brother Tsukihime and its spinoff MBAACC. Xenoblade? As soon as I found out about it, I was immediately allured into Xenosaga and Gears. On top of that, I often seek out games that are stuck in that time period, especially stuff on Sega's Saturn and Dreamcast. I'm usually intrigued by stuff like Asuka 120% or Sakura Wars. The PS2 also has some great stuff like the previously mentioned Xenosaga or other JRPGs like DotHack//.

I'd like to flesh out my feelings on this topic a lot more, especially relating to VN's and the like, but I'm tired, so I guess I'll end this train of thought here before I make any grammar mistakes.

Seconding Tower of Druaga and Lodoss (assuming you mean the Dreamcast one).

The first thing that comes to mind besides .hack are games literally based on anime IPs...Like that awful Orphen game, the Fullmetal Alchemist Games, and the Berserk games. The FMA games still look surprisingly good since they were done by Square Enix in the cell shaded style.

If we stretch anime-esque to mean anything with an even slightly anime aesthetic, I think of the Dark Cloud series, Steambot/Bumpytrop Chronicles, and Oni.

And that's just PS2..A lot more to unpack with the PS1 but for some reason you leading with .hack made me only think of the PS2 ones haha.

Some of my favorites are...
Trigun, Tenchi Muyo, Trinity Blood, Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue, Ergo Proxy, Paranoia Agent, and Elfen Lied to name a few.

I love older anime myself, it seems like newer anime just doesn't hold my attention anymore.
Or maybe I'm burnt out on 3D anime trying to look 2D.

Don't get me wrong, I like new anime.
But it just seems like older anime was better written and had more entertainment value than new series

The original Guilty Gear and Guilty Gear X are VERY anime...even though the former isn't the best game out there, the

If you're into fighting games, try Rival schools, more specifically the Dreamcast sequel PROJECT JUSTICE.

I kind of understand where you're coming from.

That era saw the creation of numerous concepts and story elements by smaller development teams. I booted up the tsukihime novel and was just amazed at the menus... It felt nostalgic despite not having experienced that time. There are some other examples that I could quote. It's almost sad. I feel like with even years of my life trying to create a story or really anything would be bad and have many issues. I'm not a huge anime fan, but I felt like giving my 2 pence on the topic

Star Ocean 2, and the first three Tales of Destiny games are pretty good.
I actually started Star Ocean not too long ago, but I made the decision to finish Xenosaga III first, so I'll be getting around to it. I went into Star Ocean blind, and its combat seems super cool to me. Is it important to know about the older games or no?

You don't have to play the SNES one first they aren't really connected story wise, but there are one or two characters that are connected to the first and and maybe some events mentioned from it as well if I remember right.

1. Scrapped Princess
2. BTX
3. Flame of Recca
4. Rave master
5. D'Gray man

I recently tried out Medabots for the Gameboy Advance and also the translation hack for the GBC game as well; they're actually pretty fun to play, like a combination of Custom Robo Arena and Pokemon.
I think the anime for Medabots was created after the games, but the games themselves have an anime art style.
