Not having a thread specifically for this game in this forum is a crime. I beat the whole game like 15 times total, doing different routes on the chapters and using different protagonists on the final chapter, and I can't believe that it didn't see the light outside of Japan until the remake (not counting the fan-translations, of course).

I think I have to honour this game by mentioning what's there to appreciate the game for, at least IMO: From outside the game seems like an irrelevant collection of minigames like they are trivial. What if I told you they are so connected that there are chapters you unlock that connect all the pieces?

So until you complete every side of the story on the game that I can say "first part of the story", you unlock the actual game and enjoy it. It was rather an interesting twist.

It's basically the same idea as the Dragon Quest IV chapter system - introduce each character with their own story, then bring them all together for the main story - but the twist is that the characters are all from different time periods and settings that are uncommon in RPGs so it doesn't seem like the stories will connect. But then beating all the first chapters unlocks the traditional fantasy RPG story, which then reveals the connection at the end and unlocks the big final chapter where everyone comes together.

The substory chapters are mostly influenced by various movies or movie genres too, and present atmospheres that you never saw in 16-bit RPGs. So that's a cool twist. I should replay that game some day.

Quite enjoyed the game. This track is fire.
I find most of the character idle themes to be awesome and pretty fitting, Yoko Shimomura really knew about variety for the tracks. The final chapter, with the "City of Despair" track and the battle theme being the main theme is just so atmospherical and awesomeeee

Thus I wanna appreciate Takashi Tokita-san's creative ideas to improve JRPG genre beyond simple turn-based combat, importance on characters and meaningful stories to experience. Thanks to him many great RPGs were inspired.
