Hi!

After only *checks calendar* eight months, another Mega Man comic book thread is here! This time I'm gonna be looking through Dreamwave Productions' Mega Man comic series, which got unfortunately canceled after only four issues due to the company going under.

This thread will be the opposite of my Archie Mega Man thread. While that thread was me reading a Mega Man comic book for the first time and hating it, this one will be about me rereading a Mega Man comic book that I enjoy.

With that out of the way, let's get it started now!

RCO004.jpg

Fun Fact: Mic Fong is the artist for Mega Man Legends Timelines #1.

Significantly Less Fun Fact: Pat Lee/Michiyamenotehi Funana is an asshole.

Our story begins the way all teen superhero stories do: with the protagonist being a little bitch about school.

RCO006.jpg

The first thing you'll notice is that Rock* is a little older here. You'll see the reason for that later. Also, in this universe Dr. Light decides not to wait until the end of his natural lifespan to make a robot with an innovative new ability to think, feel, and make their own decisions.

* Well, he's Rocky here, but I'm gonna call him Rock anyway.

RCO007_w.jpg

I appreciate how Brian Augustyn (the writer) gave an actual reason for Rock to go to school beyond making him more relatable for the intended audience of tween-teen boys.

And Auto is here, too. Ugh. Thankfully he's not too obtrusive here.
Post automatically merged:

RCO008.jpg

Ah shit, here we go again.

Another change is that Rock transforms into Mega Man via a watch like some kind of bootleg Ben 10.
Post automatically merged:

RCO009.jpg

Also, Rock can fly.

Rush? Who needs him anyway?
Post automatically merged:

RCO010.jpg

As you can see, Rock as Mega Man is quite popular in Mega City, especially among teen girls.

I like Rock being self-aware about the fact he's angsting and stopping before he could get annoying with it. Ian Flynn would never.
Post automatically merged:

RCO011_w.jpg

Silly Rock, thinking he can go splat when he's a robot.
Post automatically merged:

size.jpg

That's what she said~
Post automatically merged:

RCO013_w.jpg

Rock saves the day and, most importantly, the Light™ Perfected™ Traffic™ Control™ System™. This won't save him from going to school, however.
Post automatically merged:

RCO014.jpg

Here we see the first of this comic book's school story staples: Da Bullies™, also known as the Boltz Brothers. Their role is to bully Rock and not look similar to each other despite supposedly being brothers. I can never remember their names, so I'll just call them Guts Clone, Buckteeth, and Green.
Post automatically merged:

RCO015.jpg

As much as I like Mic Fong's art, I don't like how none of the original robot characters look like they belong in Mega Man. But then again, Yoshihiro Iwamoto had the same problem, so I won't hold it against him.
Post automatically merged:

RCO016.jpg

Now we're introduced to another school story cliché: Da Best Friend™, also known as Alan. Despite my snark, I think he's a good character. Also, he mentions him and Rock being in seventh grade, meaning that they're both 12-13 years old.
Post automatically merged:

RCO017.jpg

Foodfight!

It's strangely comforting to know that even in the universe with self-aware robots and flying cars, school cafeteria food still sucks.
Post automatically merged:

RCO018.jpg

Don't worry, Alan. Even if they try, they won't succeed thanks to Rock's plot armor and him being a super-powered robot.
Post automatically merged:

RCO019.jpg

Damn, Alan, you're one glory-seeking son of a gun. You're lucky you're so likable.

Anyway, we're now introduced to the most classic of school story character archetypes: Da Crush™, also known as Chelsea. Her existence is the most likely reason Rock is a tween here since 10-year-old boys aren't known for their interest in romance. She's actually my favorite character to come out of this comic book.
Post automatically merged:

RCO020.jpg

FUCK 'EM UP, CHELSEA!

I like to think that Chelsea beat the shit out of them in the past, and that's why Guts Clone is talking to her like this.
Post automatically merged:

RCO021.jpg

go away auto

I just realized that Rock somehow knows Alan's name despite the latter never telling him that.
Post automatically merged:

RCO022.jpg

This is just like MMBN1's DenTown scenario!

I really hate the DenTown scenario.
Post automatically merged:

RCO023.jpg

Expressman somehow reminds me of Siarnaq. It must be the head.
Post automatically merged:

RCO024.jpgRCO025.jpg

get rekt express boy

RCO026.jpg

Our first glimpse of Blues! And he's rocking a snazzy cape ala Bass.EXE.

That's it for the first issue! See you next time.

Huh, reminds me of what IDW could do if ther were to make a Megaman Charged Up adaptation, at least thewre is no annoying mascot thingy here

While less polished than IDW or Archie, you could see the artstyle as a good succesor to the former mentions

I binged all of Dreamwave Mega Man and got big sad that it didn't continue. Same with Dreamwave Devil May Cry. They were really good reads!

Time for issue 2!

RCO003.jpg

I like how, in this comic book, Dr. Light helps society outside of making more robots.
Post automatically merged:

RCO004.jpg

Hi, Heat Man!

It's funny how he's depicted as a psycho when, canonically, Heat Man is actually really chill.
Post automatically merged:

RCO005.jpg

Well, shit.
Post automatically merged:

RCO006.jpg

I don't know why Rock is using Rush Jet, considering he can fly himself.
Post automatically merged:

RCO007.jpgRCO008.jpg

Damn, that's some strong foam.

Also, robot gore!
Post automatically merged:

RCO009.jpg

get rekt hard hat boys
Post automatically merged:

RCO010.jpg

Looks like somebody's feeling hot under the collar.

...I'm awful, I know.
Post automatically merged:

RCO011.jpg

It wasn't clear in the previous issue, but the public doesn't know that Rock and Mega Man are the same person.

Honestly, I don't think it adds anything of substance to the story. The writer probably went with this because it's a staple of superhero stories.
Post automatically merged:

RCO012.jpg

Remember what I said about the Boltz brothers' role being bullying Rock? Well, I meant it in the most literal way possible. Seriously, we never see them bullying anybody except Rock.
Post automatically merged:

RCO013.jpg

Some random student with a weird character design telling you to come with him into an isolated location? Sounds not suspicious at all!
Post automatically merged:

RCO014.jpgRCO015.jpg

Does it count as breaking the First Law if your attackers hurt themselves because of your dodging?
Post automatically merged:

RCO016_w.jpg

Okay, this definitely counts as breaking the First Law.

Also, Green's fist should've shattered from punching Rock.
Post automatically merged:

RCO017.jpg

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST AND MOTHER MARY! Guts Clone seriously tried to kill Rock there! And he didn't even know that Rock is a robot!

jinx.jpg

And you just had to jinx it, Alan! ::angrygenjin

Oh yeah, Dr. Wily also made his appearance. Please remember how his name's spelled here; it'll be relevant later.
Post automatically merged:

RCO018.jpg

So yeah, the Boltz brothers are Wily's nephews, believe it or not. This means that Wily has a sibling in this universe, probably a sister, seeing as the brothers don't share a surname with Wily.

Y'know, this explains the brothers' unnatural durability.
Post automatically merged:

RCO019.jpg

I really like the moment of a man stubbing out his cigarette on a robot. It's a nice, understated way of showing humans' disregard for robots.
Post automatically merged:

RCO020_w.jpg

Good job yapping out Blues' existence to Rock, Dr. Light.
Post automatically merged:

RCO021.jpg

NOT AGAIN!
Post automatically merged:

RCO022.jpg

get rekt green bitch

Rock, stop being a fatphobic ass.
Post automatically merged:

RCO023.jpg

This is getting out of hand! Now there's three of them!
Post automatically merged:

RCO024_w.jpg

Oh no, Rock got eaten by Multi Man! Whatever shall we do?
Post automatically merged:

bass&trebledreamwave.jpg

Y'know, if this comic book lived long enough for Bass to appear, there's a chance it would've adapted Mega Man 7 by having Bass go to Rock's school under the guise of being a human student, which would be really cool and really hilarious.

That's it for the second issue! Be seeing you.

Sorry for the delay, but now we're back with the third issue!

RCO003.jpg

If you forgot, Mega Man got eaten in the last issue.
Post automatically merged:

RCO004.jpg

Ackshually, it's called the Mega Buster. 🤓
Post automatically merged:

RCO005.jpg

It appears that Rock got briefly possessed by Josh Whedon here.
Post automatically merged:

RCO006.jpg

Hi, Blues!
Post automatically merged:

RCO007.jpg

Gotta love how Rock can't tell at a glance that Blues is a robot. There are a lot of Iron Man-style armored humans in this universe, I guess? (That, or Rock is just stupid.)
Post automatically merged:

RCO008.jpgRCO009.jpg

Just brothers fighting together.
Post automatically merged:

RCO010_w.jpg

And Blues dips the moment fighting is over. Typical.
Post automatically merged:

RCO011.jpg

Damn, Dr. Light got a nice ship.
Post automatically merged:

RCO012.jpg

I'm pretty sure that the tail on the "I dunno, I could take or leave it" speech bubble is supposed to point to Rock. Also, the last dialogue is in quotes for some reason?
Post automatically merged:

RCO013.jpg

Rock got no rizz.
Post automatically merged:

RCO014.jpgRCO015_w.jpg

Awwww.
Post automatically merged:

RCO016.jpg

Goddammit. Now Rock can't get romantic with Chelsea!
Post automatically merged:

RCO017.jpg

Oh, Alan, you skirt-chaser.
Post automatically merged:

RCO018.jpgRCO019.jpg

It's okay guys. I have the same reaction whenever I hear an Imagine Dragons song.
Post automatically merged:

RCO020.jpg

And Mega Man saves the day once again!
Post automatically merged:

RCO021.jpg

Obama giving himself a medal meme with Rock's name superimposed over both Obamas

Post automatically merged:

RCO022_w.jpg

Rock has a literal heart? Why?
Post automatically merged:

RCO023.jpg

Mega Man Legends reference!
Post automatically merged:

RCO024.jpg

"What do I do now...?" Rock screamed.

Next time: the fourth and final issue! Be seeing you.

Let's finish this.

RCO003_w.jpg

The last issue does a complete swerve to the left artwise, replacing Mic Fong with Patrick "Spaz" Spaziante.

Also, wow, bold of you to imply that only human girls are real girls, text box. 😒
Post automatically merged:

RCO004.jpg

Blues can fly too!
Post automatically merged:

RCO005.jpg

Remember P.N.03? I don't. ::goblingrin
Post automatically merged:

RCO006.jpg

Typical Blues, being a jerk and not explaining anything.
Post automatically merged:

RCO007_w.jpgRCO008.jpg

Well, that was over fast.
Post automatically merged:

RCO009.jpg

That's a lotta cameos.
Post automatically merged:

RCO010.jpg

If you're wondering who's that robot girl, that's W. Waltz from a drawing that Hideki Ishikawa made for CAP!.

I hope you didn't forget what I said about Dr. Wily's spelling, 'cause they've changed it for no reason.
Post automatically merged:

RCO011.jpg

blah blah blah stop fucking with my shit wily blah blah blah
Post automatically merged:

RCO012.jpgRCO013.jpg

Dr. Light doesn't give a fuck.
Post automatically merged:

RCO014.jpg

You can even call him Cotton Eye Joe.
Post automatically merged:

RCO015.jpgRCO016.jpg

Look, it's the Yellow Devil, the worst Mega Man boss ever conceived!
Post automatically merged:

RCO017.jpgRCO018.jpg

Just brothers fighting together again.
Post automatically merged:

RCO019.jpg

The fact that Dr. Wily suddenly has a weapon implies that he was about to kill Dr. Light.
Post automatically merged:

RCO020.jpgRCO021.jpg

Yep, Dr. WIly is 100% dead.
Post automatically merged:

RCO022.jpg

Somehow I doubt you will, Dr. Light.

And hey, Roll and Rush are alright!
Post automatically merged:

RCO023.jpg

That's the end, folks!*

Although this series had its issues, it still had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, with Brian Augustyn's passing in 2022, the chances of Dreamwave Mega Man being revived are less than zero. ::sadkirby

* Well, there's also a short Mega Man X comic after this, but I don't care to talk about it.
Post automatically merged:

RCO024.jpg

Here's some nice fanart for last! And yes, that's Philippe Poulin/MegaPhilX in the bottom left.
