I would be fine with a Zelda movie on a few conditions:
  • No Chris Pratt. He was good in one GotG movie and that's it.
  • Don't make it with the Great Value™ CGI studio that did the Mario movie.
  • Make sure the script is written by someone who likes the series enough to take it seriously. Don't let them Whedon the script no matter how tempting it is to add in an "excuse me, princess."
  • Get a director who won't greyscale the whole thing and will make Hyrule look good.
  • Don't cheap out on the CGI. We don't need some ugly Marvel-level garbage making the film look bad no matter what the script is like.
  • No gimmick casting. Get actors who can do the characters right, not people who were selected by committee to draw a grab-bag audience in.
  • No Chris Pratt.

the problem with Zelda, is in fact...
Link doesn't Speak, aside the Hyeeah/Kyaah/Hyaaah/haa/hyet/haa/jum sound's he makes when being hit/attacking
<And NO! I do not count the CD-i/80's Toon links as Cannon speaking>

But... they did pull off a Well done Anime with Komi can't Communicate, so if they did it as a Anime movie. Sure it might work.

If they hire Studio Ghibli to do it with the aesthetic of windwaker it could be something worth watching. But modern Nintendo is too cheap to do such a thing.

I can guarantee that an American Legend of Zelda movie will have a thousand references to this:

I will allow ONE "excuse me princess" if it doesn't distract too much from the scene its in. But it is a FINE line

This hot writer is attached to a lot of video game project scripts.

Derek Connolly attended New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

His screenplay credits include:

Untitled Eternal Champions film adaptation (TBA) is based on the Sega fighting game.

He as also worked on a draft of Sony‘s “Metal Gear Solid” adaptation.

Oofff. Sounds like we should expect more modern Hollywood slop from this fellow.

Oh good god, it could be even worse than I expected. Pokémon movie aside, the rest is just useless garbage.

An Eternal Champions movie? I don't think anyone has ever asked for that even when it was new, except a guy I knew in high school who swore the SCD version was the best fighting game because of the cinekills.

Anyway, Zelda movie, I'll pass. The appeal to that series to me is finding the secrets and figuring out how to do things out of order, so I can't imagine a movie scratching that itch. But I know people will definitely go see it and probably love it.

Just about none of them are solo credits, he's basically Colin Trevorrows writing partner. (Which, in fairness, means they only turned out a *draft* of Rise of Skywalker, not the final theatrical script.)

Kong: Skull Island was pretty good, but unless his collaborators were merely weighing him down - like Piccolos weighted turban - I can't imagine the script will be anything special.

Wes Ball as the attached director is more exciting, his work on Maze Runner - in my opinion, don't come at me fans of the books - really lifted the material. The plot of the second and third movies in that series were pretty awful, but Ball managed a surprising amount of fun action and cool visuals with what he was working with.

What's next? A Primal Rage movie? Timekillers movie? What other lame 90's fighting game can they revive?

Link actually speaks, it's just not extradiegetic.

The NPCs are answering to things he said to them, even questions, it's just that they don't show it explicitly in-game.

Even if he has (rarely) talked in various moments.

Like in Adventure of Link

As well as in Link's Awakening

Seems wildly innapropriate for a Zelda movie, unless they plan to make a generic Hollywood version of Zelda and not a whimsical fantasy take on it. I don't see anything in his resume that screams "I'd be good at writing an all ages fantasy movie".

Like I said, probably not a good script. I could see Ball knocking out a cool dungeon set-piece though, the actual "maze" sequence of the first Maze Runner was fun.

Although, there's also a really good chance that none of the people working on it now are the ones who finish it though, or that it even comes out.

Here's a pitch for you: What if we did a big crossover of Way of the Warrior, Kasumi Ninja, Ultra Vortek, BloodStorm, War Gods, Cosmic Carnage, and Battle Monsters? You can't go wrong with that set up, right? ::winnie

....shit, I would watch that though. "Knockoff Mortal Kombat: Dream Match", preferably with some clueless POV character wondering what all these people are fighting for and unaware what genre of movie he's in. (Tucker and Dale vs Big Lots Mortal Kombat, basically).

I was thinking about this and it feels like these 4 actors are the kiss of death for any serious attempt at a video game movie.

  • Chris Pratt
  • Seth Rogen
  • Jack Black
  • Ryan Reynolds

All of these actors are either potheads or have been indoctrinated by the Marvel school of quippy acting.

What you can tell about a film by those actors being in it:
  • Pratt: The film will focus heavily on how much of a whiny man-child the main character is. He will behave better by the end, but, as if in a status quo sitcom, he'll be back to square one in the sequel.
  • Rogen: The film is going to either be a stoner film, or have the writing quality of one. Don't expect anything smart to be said.
  • Black: Everything will be way too goofy for what you wanted out of the film. Expect a lot of unnecessary screaming.
  • Reynolds: Pratt-lite. Less annoying, still man-child focused, but kind of self-aware in a smarmy way.

Either generic or trying too hard to be Tolkien-ish and western-like instead of having that japanese take on European Medieval fantasy that Dragon Quest, early FF and Zelda were.

I don't see anything in his resume that screams "I'd be good at writing an all ages fantasy movie".
And even if it's an all-ages some people wish it would be dark...

I unironically want a stop motion or puppet play OVA of Zelda

He did Rise of Skywalker, oh man we’re definitely fucked.
