I recently looked into the Megami Tensei series and I'm a huge fan of the world. I wanted to start from the beginning, but I forgot how little hand holding Japanese games do. I'm still a little confused about the moon phases, and how much XP grinding I should do between heals (I keep running out of cash, lol).

Any advice or general tips? Thanks!

my advice is that you should grind just enough to recruit/fuse stronger demons fusing is more efficient than leveling.

For Cash stick to auto-battle in easy areas, heal at terminals cuz cheaper and sell extra gear. Early game is tight, but it opens up fast.

Good luck boyo

There's alot of cryptic shit, especially in Megaten 1 as far as needing to do some kinda random stuff. It's been awhile since I've played but, don't feel bad about using a guide is what I'm saying lol and always fill out the map

There's more to SMT than bonk the demon to progress. The moon phases act as a way to tell the time. However it also plays a role in what demons will appear where in certain areas as well as if a side quest or important event will occur. When you negotiate with demons be aware that savestates are a necessity because they might not join you right away. Another thing is that the moon phases also act as a way of knowing when you can talk to demons. If memory serves, even if a demon normally can be recruited, if the moon phase is on a new moon, they will always be aggressive and cannot be recruited no matter what you do. If it is a new moon, always fight the demons you encounter if you feel you need the levels. There is no way of knowing when you should grind and how much levels you will need but side quests will be shoved down you're throat a lot so be sure to do them when they appear and always make sure you have the best equipment you possibly can have even if it means farming a demon for a weapon or armor drop.

brave soul you are. if you're emulating, i dont see anything wrong with using save states and what not to ease some of the more dated aspects of the game and to aid in negotiations because it can feel like a crapshoot.

but to echo, do the side quests you can, dont recruit on full moons (new moons are safe im pretty sure but you'll find out quick) and just constantly make sure you have the best equipment you can get.

It's the full moon that make it impossible to recruit? I thought it was the new moon that does it.

It may be too late for this advice, but honestly the easiest way to grind for cash if you're emulating the game is to use save states while playing Big or Small in the casino. If you get (I think) nine correct guesses in a row, you not only get a lot of money out of it, but you get a prize that can be sold for a lot too. I managed to cap out my money that way.
