In my research, I discovered that this game tells a story that's a sort of prequel to an animated film. Now, is it really necessary to have seen that film to better contextualize this one?
It doesn't context much aside from explaining why there's no more zeon attacks on federation.

I played it once and I didn't know what to do other than try to attack the enemy and avoid against the game's attacks but that was the only thing I know being a strategy game from the Kidou Senshi Gundam/Mobile Suit Gundam series.

This ain't a strategy game

It's more like an old Dynasty Warriors (or Dynasty Warriors DS) kind of game but the action part is basically getting getting the enemy into your firing range then doing a RNG attack

You don't control anyone else (which strategy games do), just your gundam (F90 variations or the F91); if anything, it's not Warcraft but DotA
It's still very heavy on strategy, I prefer action games, beat em ups, one on one fighters, hack n slash, space shooters, run and gun and platformers, even rhythm games, Evangelion 3nd Impact on PSP is a good rhythm game, I've played the giant mech games I could find that aren't strategy but the vast majority are strategy.

"Gundamn it" another strategy, I love giant mechs as I grew up with old animes but most giant mech video games are tactics and I suck at those.
