And I do have to say this little handheld is quite interesting. You are pretty much get what you're paying for. It is $90, runs games great, and the devs applied the right bezzles and shaders to give it the console and handheld look. The only issue I'm running into so far is that sometimes the wifi won't connect. I'm saying you get what you pay for because it does sort of look cheaply made and the battery does run warm when charging and the handheld is running.

Like I said, the games do run great. I haven't had any real slowdowns. I'm also surprised PSP games run pretty smooth. For right now I'm going to try to get through Yu-Gi-Oh WC 2004 on the handheld only and see if any big issues pop up as I do. That's if I can stop getting my butt handed to me by the various decks.

I have the RG40XXV. I recommend getting MUOS (Mustard OS). Much better than the shitty default OS and much faster and more customizable. Lots of user made themes, more options, and I recommend getting rid of the SD card that it shipped with when you can. It's garbage and will fail on you pretty quickly.

I have a RG CubeXX and I love it, I wish I would have spent the extra 60 to get the regular RG Cube since it has touchscreen and can emulate up to the PS2 Where the XX Stops at PS1, but I can't complain at all about the performance of the little handheld at all

I got an RGG40XX H for myself a few days back and just got around to installing the Knulli custom firmware today. Its a fork of batocera and I much prefer it to the stock OS so far.
As to it feeling a bit cheap, hard to disagree there. D-pad could be a bit nicer and I can't imagine it surviving a drop.
Still though, the price is right for what it offers

I didn't even know there were any other OS or a custom firmware. I just assumed these devices were so niche that no one ever bothered with them. I'm going to look into this first thing in the morning. Thank you.

If you need any troubleshooting help let me know. The OS can be finicky, but that's the devices fault for most of it.

Hey, thanks for the heads up on this. I remember using Batocera on my Pi and forgot this existed.

Thank you. I installed Knulli instead because I'm sort of familiar with Batocera. I'm thinking about getting a different retro handheld, maybe a flip one, and when I do I'll check out MUOS.

Is there a decent guide that you're aware of for installing custom OS? And which would be the best OS to use?

MUOS or Mustard OS https://muos.dev/help/install

Install is pretty easy. Do not install this on the SD card the system shipped with. All of these precautions is just par for the course for these Chinese handhelds. It's all in the way the kernel is written.

Word of advice for all Anbernic devices (as I went through this three times)

  • Do not use the reset button. If the system is writing to the card it will corrupt your whole install and not boot. You'll need to wipe the card and start over.
  • Do not use a Linux computer with auto-mounting such as the Steam Deck. You need to turn off auto-mounting especially if you put the card into a Steam Deck to copy files. Steam Deck sees the install as corrupt and tries to auto-fix the SD card in the background.
  • Make sure you safely eject the SD card from the PC before taking it out. If the PC is writing to the card and you pull it this will corrupt the install.
  • Use the SHUTDOWN option on the Anbernic before pulling the main SD card. If you use TF2 slot then it shouldn't be an issue.
