What are some JRPGs you played that had an obsene amount of random encounters throughout the game?

For me, it would be the Dragon Quest I on SFC, but at the very least each battle was quick as it's 1 vs 1.
I also found Final Fantasy IX to be pretty packed with them. It was to a lesser extent than DQ I, but due to the initial animation and attack animations, each battle was quite longer than it needed and would make me think twice before exploring locations. Still an amazing game!

Before anything, I only count games with random encounter enemies that have no possibility to lower or remove them with accessories or skills within the game. Being said that, Beyond the Beyond was very tedious when I was playing it.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin or Eternal Punishment (I can't remember which exactly) got quite silly closer to the end - I ended up getting so disoriented by it that I remember getting a headache at one point. It got so bad that I used the legendary one time "clone an item" item to just make another Repel so I could walk around for a bit without getting ambushed.

That's actually a good point. In DQ I you have a spell later on to avoid battles with low-levelled enemies. I does improve the overall experience.

This. I bought it physical when ds was still new, I saw a screenshot of the world map and it looked like old ff and I thought it was cool. The game wasn't bad at all, but I hated two things: too many battles and a dungeon later in the game in which I was going crazy to find the way out.

I guess with QoL now in many games ,FF9 would look boring, but when I played it I was not spoiled yet and I was looking for as many random battles as I could because I wanted everyone to learn every skills.

That's one of the reasons why i avoided the old Persona/Shin Megami Tensei games ::sickening

Don't get me wrong, the games overall as packages are fantastic and I rate them above the modern titles, but they definitely didn't get the encounter rate right in some dungeons. I like being able to finish a battle and take more than one step before getting into another fight, you know.

I don't get the thought process of making these random encounters so frequent. Jrpgs in general encourage the player to explore the map, for treasure and secrets, but if they get bombarded by enemies all the time, it's like the game is punishing the player for exploring ::apollo

I did not find it boring at all, but I must say that walking 10 steps and encountering 3 Lamias back to back in Gizamaluke's Grotto got a bit on my nerves after a while. ::hellmo

As much as I love the original "MOTHER" on the Famicom, the encounter rate in that game is atrociously high.

Digimon World 2003, every five steps you fight, It's ridiculous to the point that in small areas you can face up to 4/5 consecutive hordes of enemies!

I'd say Breath of Fire 2, Final Fantasy V and Black Sigil
Absolutely not. Everytime I read somebody compaining about Breath of Fire II encounter rate I should barge in: the game has one of the best systems of random encounter rate I've yet to see in modern games. You have a little creature dancing in your status menu, if the creature is dancing nerviously means the encounter rate is high, but after you do a few encounters in a specific area, you "clean it up", then the creature starts dancing more quietly. At that moment, the encounter rate is totally ok.

In addition, you have smoke item, to lower the encounter rate temporarily, and it's very cheap.

I will forgive you because you're still a teenie and the game is not from your time ::winkfelix

Ok but it almost never seems to work
Because smoke does not work in new discovered areas, or specific areas where the encounter rate is high only.

For you to see, it won't work when the sprout is dancing with the grin on his face or very nerviously. The former is when you discover new story areas and the latter is when the encounter rate is unavoidable. Also, take in count that if you use smoke and change rapidly the area, it will vanish.

As a JRPG Gamer who loves to LV Grind, which I wanna make sure my Party members are at a good LV,but even I can't overlook the rediculous amount of Extreme Encounter Rates these Games, even if they are good, the following include

Dragon QUest 2 (Especially the NES Version, which was already an unbalanced mess to begin with, which wasn't properlly tested, but the rediculous amount of Encounter Rates didn't Help things any Better)

Phantasy Star II (Those god damn Blasters in that one dungeon, every 5 steps is rediculous, kept wiping my party out)

Sailor Moon RPG: Another Story (In the Name of the Moon........even Usagi Tsukino couldn't punish the Absurb amount of Evil that the encounter Rates in this game that attack the Sailor Guardians!]

Breath of Fire games in general (Especially Breath of Fire 1 and Breath of Fire 2)

The Super Chinese Series by Culture Brain was also guilty of this too (especially Little Ninja Brothers and it's Super Nintendo FOllow=up Sequel SUper Ninja Boy)

Dual Orb 2 for SNES has an item to reduce the encounter rate later in the game and even so the rate was high. Legend of Dragoon for PS1 has a high encounter rate later in-game in a certain area.

I enjoy rpg that is consistent but it's good...

Glory of Heracles 2 - FC every five steps encounter is a pain
Branmarker 2 for PC98
SMT3 for PS2
Zeron for PC (also with low hit rate, but the plot is good)
BOF2 for SNES

I swear, every 3 steps in that game triggered another battle.

I like "Another Story", but JESUS CHRIST, the encounter rate is atrocious!
