Ja-En Translators wanted for Pocket King (GBC) translation, no technical skills needed

Got another tricky one for you two:
Here's the context: I'm using an item on a unit - the items don't heal or anything like that, I think they are like promotion items - see how the item is being 'fused' with the unit and it could be (but is not) getting a new class.

itemuse.png

The text is telling me some result that will happen, I think that something will be raised by 1?
ぼうぎょりょくが1あがります。

Here are nearby strings that might be other possible outcomes (or maybe not, they are nearby in the ROM, but might be for other things):
いどうりょくが1あがります。
こうげきりょくが2あがります。
ぼうぎょりょくが1あがります。
HPが1あがります。
いどうりょくが2あがります。
こうげきりょくが1あがります。
ぼうぎょりょくが2あがります。
HPが3あがります。
まほうたいせいがかわります。
Different kinds of gains, maybe?

1) Defence has been increased by 1.

The other strings:
2) Movement has been increased by 1.
3) Attack power has been increased by 2.
4) (Same as #1)
5) Health has been increased by 1.
6) Movement power has been increased by 2.
7) Attack power has been increased by 1.
8) Defence has been increased by 2.
9) Health has been increased by 3.
10) Something about magic changing because it uses the kana for 変わる

I think you're right about the strings being about leveling thing up. You know how in the Persona games that the playable characters' Personas have stats that level up? I believe it's similar to that. So it would increase the health from 50 to 51 in their stats, for example.

The format is essentially “__りょくが N あがります。” which literally means “__ stat will increase by N,” so in English you can either use a full sentence like “Defense will increase by 1.” or (more common game shorthand) a stat-plus format: Defense +1

iisoide is correct in the translations, but for simplification purposes you may want the following:
  • いどうりょくが1あがります。
    Movement +1
  • いどうりょくが2あがります。
    Movement +2
  • こうげきりょくが1あがります。
    Attack +1
  • こうげきりょくが2あがります。
    Attack +2
  • ぼうぎょりょくが1あがります。
    Defense +1
  • ぼうぎょりょくが2あがります。
    Defense +2
  • HPが1あがります。
    HP +1
  • HPが3あがります。
    HP +3
  • まほうたいせいがかわります。
    Magic Resistance Changes
(if you know the exact new value, you could say “Magic Resist +N” or “Magic Resist becomes N”)

Sweet, thank you both - this is great.

Thanks to you two I was able to translate all the item effects. Some modify stats by 1,2, or 3. Some increase resistances to the game's many elements. One effect is a class change.

Next up, are the level names - there are quite a few and the last couple might not even be level names, but they are in that 'block'. You can ignore my notes - I have to fit these into 8 letters for now, but you can translate freely:

ル-フェのもり LfForest
ウネウネとうげ WndgPeak
ウィズのむら WizVlg
ラクリしんでん
ハラハラさばく

  • んばし
    Nnbashi (likely a fragment/corrupted)

Notes on a few entries:
  • “ヘビイジャンゴ” (Hebiijango) and “フㇱコのむら” (Fushiko Village) use small ㇱ/ㇰ characters; I’ve treated those as part of the proper name rather than translating their literal meaning.
  • “ナムこうざん” is written as “Nam Mine” (鉱山 = mine) instead of “Nam Volcano.”
  • “まおうぐんとりで” is a typical “魔王軍砦” construction, “Fortress of the Demon King.” If you prefer shorter, you could also say “Demon King’s Fort" but for 8 characters maybe "DKngFort".
  • The last two entries (“いっ” and “んばし”) appear truncated or corrupted; I’ve given a straightforward romanization (“Itt” and “Nnbashi”) as placeholders. If those turn out to be part of a longer name, you can merge them or adjust as needed.

iisoide is correct in the translations, but for simplification purposes you may want the following
Yeah, I decided to go for the full meaning as opposed to the more well-known variant as that's the kind of stuff that can be added and modified later on when necessary.

At university we did a whole module on the process of translating from (or to) Japanese and what they recommend is doing the full translation first so that if it needs to be passed to others down the line in the process, they can change it to better fit when they get that translation (like simplifying it to just "Attack +2" etc).

I think providing the full meaning is a great idea, and I also really appreciate the shortening advice. Giving me the 'formula' for the stat ups really helped me crack that issue, too. I have a lot of trouble with 'partitioning' the words when looking at Japanese or trying to use dictionaries/translation aids - doubly so with kana-only.

Hopefully some people will give the game a try! I plan to do a playthrough just to translate menus/enemies and hopefully at that point well get players and more translators on board for the story segments.
