Is there anything you do when you want to fully get into an old game?

In the dark on a TV is my usual formula. And if I want to pretend it’s the old days, I’ll skim a GameFaqs strategy guide once I’m into the game. No walkthroughs unless I’m really stuck though.

I avoid looking up anything, if I can help it. 99% of the time, any time I don't know what to do next, the game tells me what it is (or I missed something obvious). NPCs in JRPGs tend to be great for that. I also go in completely blind, which lets me enjoy the game without any outside influences.
