Is there a very thin chance that Ice Climber could get a new entry?

This may sound stupid to say but is there any way to make a sequel from a well known yet still lost in time franchise.

Not necessarily with a 3D entry (games like Peak may prove that you can make climbing fun), just a game that plays and looks good.

I feel that it is possible that there is a sequel to Ice Climber but the Big N is afraid of success but as a sequel itself it would have a more polished gameplay especially have more freedom to move in the air and that they are somewhat less slippery, Continues and Saves system, better graphics, varied level design, the possibility of playing up to 4 players, more game modes such as the possibility of playing in versus, challenges, create your own design of the mountains and among other game modes and other things to continue mentioning what the future sequel to Ice Climber would be like.

It’s never impossible. Nintendo loves their history, the name is relevant because of Smash Bros., and if somebody has a strong idea then Nintendo will put money behind it. It’s also never confirmed, as the niche appeal of the name might kill a project if it doesn’t seem to have strong enough gameplay. It’s also possible that a project would evolve into a more well known IP during development.


The point is: the likelihood is never 0%, but don’t count on it. It’ll only happen if somebody comes up with a great gameplay idea with lots of expandability, since that’s what gets games greenlit within Nintendo.

(Examples in recent memory of this phenomenon are Kid Icarus Uprising and Famicom Detective Club: Emil The Smiling Man. Also Endless Ocean for some reason. Nintendo WILL revive stuff, but it’s always a matter of gameplay or an engaging new story. It’s also a matter of making the bigwig bosses happy, as FDC came back because of the old writer being good friends with people still in the company.)

Nintendo HATE their fans they HATE good games they HATE good frame rate and above all they HATE money.

So no the chance of that game even getting a new game is 1 in a Googolplex. I mean they not touched that game sense 1985. Sure they added Popo and Nana to smash bros but that don´t count nor means jack.

Maybe Super Mario Bros has killed any potential sequel for Ice Climber since it introduced scrolling platforming and the ability to have better control on jumping.

Also making a platformer based on vertical movement is trickier (Kid Icarus managed but even then the first level without any upgrade is brutal because of that).

Having a two player coop in mind could help and adding more biomes than just icy mountains would add some variety (maybe the final mountain could be an active volcano).

But ultimately having a platformer with block breaking and hammer swinging is very limited.

Probably not if we're being brutally realistic here. I'd love for Nintendo to revive a lot of their older games and franchises, but Nintendo, like pretty much everyone else in the industry right now, are pretty much strictly playing it safe with what they know people will be interested in and will sell well. I just don't really see them going back to take risks on older IP's coming back even if they have a fresh, original concept for them.

i think Ice Climber has had a slight revival during the Gamecube/GBA era when people got to play it again via Animal Crossing, NES Classic Series, and e-reader as well as having an appearance in Melee and that was about it.

Probably not if we're being brutally realistic here. I'd love for Nintendo to revive a lot of their older games and franchises, but Nintendo, like pretty much everyone else in the industry right now, are pretty much strictly playing it safe with what they know people will be interested in and will sell well. me too. Which is why the Gamecube one is the only Animal Crossing i've owned and played. :)

Interesting question.

I don't think a new installment for the Ice Climbers is such a bad idea.
Possibly if they added more frenetic climbing,bosses and a strong multiplayer factor people would possibly like it a lot.
Although some examples have already been seen in the indie gaming scene...

Bubble Bobble for Friends and Snow Bros 2d HD efforts had mixed reception, hence I am not sure whether Nintendo will be able to mix successfully the cards.
Snow Bros 3d game was interesting though and Ice Climber 3d could be as good and with voices too.
Just don't try to use seals in this day and age

Bread & Fred feels like a ragegame spiritual successor to Ice Climbers, or like if one made a game based on their Smash depiction.

I have thought for a long time now that Ice Climber could use a reboot, and with the release of Bread & Fred, I feel more vindicated than ever that I was right. There is real potential for a co-op experience in Ice Climber.

The key factor here is Nintendo needs to be okay with making small budget games again. Ice Climber isn't going to set the charts on fire, no matter how good it is. Give it to a passionate B-team and price it accordingly.

I don't think it would happen. But if these NES games such as Balloon Fight, Kid Icarus, Excitebike, and Wrecking Crew can get sequels and spinoffs, why not Ice Climber? Ice Climber can work on Gameboy or Super Nintendo with same gameplay and same characters but add a new story in the mix and platformers sell big on Gameboy and SNES. Nintendo likes to experiment on their IPs and sometimes ignore them if it's not Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Kirby, Splatoon, Metroid, or Animal Crossing.

It may sound crazy but I wouldn't want Ice Climber to be a "mountain climbing simulator" but rather a climbing-themed vertical platformer.

But I'd imagine that there could be a mountain range so horizontal levels cannot be thrown out of the window.

I wish they did. Btw, a lot of old NES/Famicom games could be back, like Wrecking Crew, Gyromite, Excitebike, Balloon Fight... They could make both individual games out of them, and crossovers. They have the personnel, but I am afraid they lack interest in it.

Don't get me wrong, I love Nintendo as a game creator, but I hope they change someday. They feel like a company of very outdated habits. Maybe when/if younger people with deep knowledge of their catalogue get in charge, things will change.
