I know Shin Megami Tensei is much different from Persona, but has there ever been a vote as to which game in the series is better?

Your title of the thread mentions Persona 3, however it sounds like you want this thread to be focused on Persona 4 Golden compared to SMT3 Nocturne. You should still be able to edit the title, if you meant for it to say Nocturne instead of P3.

To answer the questions: I prefer all of SMT over Persona, so my vote goes to Nocturne. In terms of P3 vs P4, I don't have an opinion, unfortunately.

Just edited the thread after realizing the mistake. Thank you!

to be honest

Persona 4 is my least favorite PS2 Megaten game so... I prefer Nocturne despite isn't my favorite mainline game or my favorite PS2 Megaten game

anyway, Digital Devil Saga duology clears both tho

I'm not a huge fan of Persona 4, and my best friend dislikes it entirely.
I enjoy the atmosphere of Nocturne. I heard the new PC port brought some quality of life features that may be helpful. I'm only familiar with the PS2 version.

Digital Devil Saga is awesome too and it features Etro Anime xD

Nocturne for sure, but I can't say I've played Persona 4 enough to give it a fair shake.

They have pros and cons with Persona being more focused on social and dating-sim features compared to the usual wild demon recruiting of SMT games.
But yeah, while Persona games are definitely more accessible and 4 is pretty much the best way to get into them (even compared to 5), Nocturne is just the overall better and I dare say the still undisputed best of all MegaTen games for hardcore fans to this day.

Technically breakfast IS better than dinner because breakfast makes the most of your daily energy, yes. Which admittedly might also apply to Nocturne as it's one of, if not THE most important game in the MegaTen franchise overall and become the main hub to other MegaTen games, to the point that its MC oftentimes got cameo'd into other games, as the secret boss that would frustrate people to no end.

Still though, we're comparing a spinoff and a mainline title. This really is a coughing baby vs hydrogen bomb scenario. Its unfair to compare Persona to the mainline series, especially when 4 was such a significant leap from the formula. Persona 3 started to differentiate the spinoff series from SMT, but Persona 4 really took that leap forward. The games are incomparable.

Idk i voted golden because of what the other said. Your comparing tomatoes to apples, they are both fruits but with vastly different uses. I think the same kinda happen when comparing between the SMT franchise and a spin-off series that aside from the demons design and some other elements, they are vastly different in terms of target demographic, themes touched and even gameplay experience. I am a Persona 4 enjoyer, i said multiple times is my favorite game of all time and i will die on that hill. BUT Nocturne is goated too, even though it isn’t even my favorite SMT game (SMT IV my beloved). Also i don’t really think Golden is that great, i vastly prefer the PS2 original. However i understand why putting Golden as is the most convenient title to play nowadays.

But yeah, I don’t think these two are that comparable, the similarities end basically when we mention that they are from the ps2 era, they share some demon designs and are made by Atlus. That’s it

It depends. Nocturne are for folks who wants a more serious, less anime approach, while 4 is more lively, colorful, more anime approach to the series. For me, 4 was way more fun. Nocturne just looked more cooler.

SMT is for the most part way better than Persona with few exceptions: I greatly dislike Persona 3 and 4 but they are nowhere near as bad SMT V.

this is tough, persona 4 golden grabbed me more, but then again the dialogue in naoto's dungeon was extremely unpleasant to me as someone with gender dysphoria. i'd still say both are 10s though

I really did like Persona 4 Golden, but I think Nocturne impacted me more than Persona 4 Golden.

I also feel that I liked Persona 3 and 5 more than 4. Not that 4 was bad, but it feels less noticeable to me when comparing it to 3 and 5.
