Hi everyone,

I wanted to start a discussion about Counter-Strike 1.6 and its lasting appeal. Despite the rise of modern shooters with advanced graphics and mechanics, many players still return to CS 1.6 for its simplicity, balance, and skill-based gameplay.

Do you think the classic movement, recoil control, and map design (like Dust2 and Inferno) make it superior to newer titles, or is nostalgia the main reason people stick with it? Are community servers and mods enough to keep it alive today?

I’d love to hear your experiences, opinions, and whether you still actively play this timeless FPS classic.

Best classic FPS? Whoa now, lets hold our horses on that title! However, you might be onto something saying best classic MULTIPLAYER fps since I do think it will outlive us all due to its unique server browser (by today's standards) and ability to run on some of the lowest end computers ever which makes it incredibly accessible to places that can't get modern machines!
That said, I was playing a bit of 1.6 recently and the game can really be dead at 3pm on a Wednesday, but weekends you'll usually find three or four servers with 24-ish players.
I don't have a lot of experience personally with the quake franchise- so I'm not one to speak on the livelihood of their playerbase, but valve is really good about making it as easy as clicking three times in the main menu of pretty much every cs game to make a lobby with a bunch of your friends!

Counter strike is the best FPS overall , proven by its longevity despite all the obstacles and problems the games face , CS 1.6 i would say is GOATED for the reasons you mentioned , however it's worth noting many servers have pay to win elements along with hackers sometimes.

I still like it , it has cool maps that aren't seen again in the sequels , estate and siege along with oil rig comes to mind

I got excited, I said: "GREAT a new game in the Strike Series

Then I realized that we were talking about when the people who made the
BEST FPS EVER!!! crapped out a piece of garbage called CS

It's definitely the best multiplayer one.

I didn't even like the genre and I spent an embarrassing amount of money just shooting up everything that moved in internet cafes all through the aughts.

It has held up surprisingly well, too.

Like others said here yeah, maybe best classic multiplayer shooter. I think it comes down to where you grew up. Over here in Eastern Europe it was the biggest thing for sure. A lot bigger than Quake and Unreal Tournament. It still is huge over here, hell some of my friends still play it. I hopped back on it a year or two ago too for the old memories, although most of my time playing it as a child was the zombies community servers. Man I've sunken too many hours on those servers...
