Smite is a really cool MOBA. It's over the shoulder third person. It presents a really unique perspective to play from.

I've played a lot of Smite. I think it's still my top played game on Steam, which is a huge deal considering the fact that I've poured hundreds of hours into other RPGs.

Why do I keep taking long hiatuses? The player base, plain and simple. The normal cash-grabbing of a F2P was tolerable, even when some of the skins started coming from absurd IPs. Sometimes it's hard to tell who a God is, but whatever. Let people have their fun, right?

And then Smite 2's closed Alpha came out. I was so excited to support the studio and play in a new engine. There's so much room for cooler stuff now.

Sadly, the company seems to forget a fundamental fact of doing business; Sometimes number doesn't go up, and that's OK.

Because they weren't making absolute bank immediately, they started absolutely gutting their staff. People that had been part of Smite for years, gone. Important members of the community, gone.

All of this, plus poor monetization and a lack of response to an ever-growing toxic player base, has led me to one of my longest hiatuses from the game.

I may not go back this time, who knows? I really like Smite for what it could be, but it doesn't look like Hi-Rez is ever going to really tap into all that tasty potential.

Mythology is always cool, smite was a really cool game for being a moba, it's sad to hear it's going throu all this...

That sucks, when something is so close to great, but never quite gets there. I played it a bit, when I was going through a MOBA kick, but one day I played a 2D entry called Awesomenauts and I only wanted another game like it from that point on. (It's pretty much my Smite, in comparison!)

Also this is a little embarrassing but at first I was confused, "Uhhhh Gardenia that game was closed ages ago, no wonder you can't play it!"

The game I was thinking of:

I think I remember hearing about Paragon. Was it really unique and cool?

I think it was a little more fast paced, and your character controlled more like a 3D action game, albeit with cooldowns. Not really unique, just a way of bringing a MOBA to a more agreeable console experience with a controller. It did an okay job of that - being able to jump around with some verticality in a game like this felt different - but the boring art and character design and familiar mechanics didn't make it too endearing.

Man Awesomenauts was a good time... I played that split-screen with friends for hours when it first came out.

Smite was the game I had to quit because I was spending too much money on loot crates. Back on ps4 I would end up being out whole loot box drops just for one skin I would want. I do still have some fond memories of me playing as that one Kappa god and just spinning around everywhere

Kuzenbo is super fun. I was getting a bit into guardians when I quit.

I played Smite here and there back in my MOBA days, it was decent from what I remember. I liked the Norse guy who changed between ranged and melee, can't remember his name at all. Of all the non-DOTA ones I played I think it was probably one of my favourites behind HoTS and another game.

That was my second favourite MOBA, it's a shame it got killed for more Fortnite of all things. It was great, it was more of a traditional third person shooter combined with a MOBA and had some fantastic character designs and gameplay styles. The mech rabbit was so goddamn fun, and Greyscale was one of the sickest sword and board warrior types I've played.

Ullr! He hits like a truck!! Super fun but kinda hard to play.

I've got a mate who lived and breathed SMITE for well over a year. I watched him play a bit, and it seemed quite fun. Haven't heard much at all about SMITE II, though.

It's sad. The sound design and new look makes it feel like a mobile game.
