Modding video games opens a new possibilty for players to explore the game which extends playtime and enhances the experince of the game.

Of course some games are easier to mod than others , some games are further improved with mods making the experince with mods even better than the original.

How much do you find modding important?

(Sorry console gamers but this thread is Going to be a PC master race thread)

Very, it's what makes a game better most of the time. Doom WADS for example (and this article by @RanmyakuIchi for example), the primary mechanism for modding the game, allowing for custom levels, graphics, sounds, and more. So many mods was made by a bunch of creators, with a community that's still going pretty strong

I absolutely agree with you, bro.
Some of my favorite games I wouldn't have been able to play if it weren't for improvement mods and romhacks, especially the Pokemon games.
I definitely wouldn't have played them at all if it weren't for hacks that allow you to evolve pokemon without trading.

mods and hack can make a game better
¨ like the hacks in all the pokemon games for GB GBC and GBA
where the hack did make them easier and more balance in attacks weaknesess and level
tthose hack did make it more fun to play pokemon on GB GBC and GBA
i would not have played all those pokemon games on GB GBC and GBA if it was not for those hack that did take away alot of level grinding

so i think that some games do get better with mod and hacks while other games simply do not need it

I find modding extremely important. There literal game companies whose success is only because of modding (Bethesda). They not only makes games more fun but also fixes bugs or adds QoL improvements that the developers are either too lazy or incompetent to do.

They're fine by me, community effort to fix games that are unplayable on modern systems are greatly appreciated. Nude mods and all that crap is freaking pathetic, master race indeed.

Modding is important to me when they fix bugs/restore cut content in the original games that the devs werent aware of. This is EVEN MORE IMPORTANT when it's a PC game where those situations happen the most. Here is one example of a mod that i like because it does both:

I haven't played it yet, but I'm glad someone has modded FF8 (in the psx version) to add the chocobo feature. I remember I had the game for pc, long time ago, and that chocobo minigame was an "app" you installed on pc and then it opened a little window with black-and-white pixel and you could make the chocobo explore and fight; after playing it, there was a way to transfer the save inside ff8 to unlock items. In the psx was a separate device, I think? So now it's impossible to play it with just an emulator or even a ps2 + physical ps1 discs of ff8, meaning it's impossible to obtain in-game the summon and those items locked beyond the minigame. The mod (posted on this repo) fixes this.

Mods can often give a game a lifespan and fandom far beyond its original course or scope. Doom is the quintessential example, and you know how I love me some Doom mods.

Thanks for the shout-out, @DunkeyKong !

Translations, which certainly qualifies as modding, are personally pretty important. There are so many games I would never have played if it weren't for the efforts of the modders.

On top of that, I firmly believe that some of the remakes that were released by the original devs only happened because someone in the company saw how popular their game was, thanks at least in part to the mods or translations that were made.

Tales of Phantasia is a perfect example.

Reminds me of the whole WarCraft 2 fan project that met insane success and blizzard followed it with a remaster of WC2.... Modding keeps WarCraft 3 alive.

Huh i missed that game mode glad someone made it playable without needing the extra stuff

Modding is extremely important. Besides what others have said about improving or extending games, several major genres wouldn't even exist without mods.

Counter-Strike/Valorant > Half-Life mod
Overwatch/Marvel Rivals > Team Fortress 2 > Half-Life mod > Quake mod
DOTA/LOL > Warcraft 3 mod
Rocket League > Unreal Tournament 2004 mod
Any battle royale game > ARMA 2 mod

Which is why companies like Blizzard have made it so anything you make for their games legally belongs to the company. They can't stand not profiting off of what creative fans make for free.

In general, my favorite mods are those that provide an upgraded vanilla experience that don't change the game too drastically.

In quite a few cases, there have been mods/romhacks that go above and beyond in giving users a more personalized experience of a game that completely outclasses what's on offer from the official release; Sonic 3 A.I.R and Sonic 3 Complete are those that immediately pop up in my mind.

You are right Counter strike and MOBA exist cuz modding.

Oh yeah i prefer more simple bug fixes and few tweaks rather than massive stuff

I love how multiplayer and modding are making some games timeless.

But on another hand I think that the base game must be great by itself to begin with.

If someone sells me a game saying "it's mid but with mods it becomes great" it's already a kind of red flag for me.

Sonic 3 Complete is great (although S3&K itself is still a really good experience).

AIR and other engines are drastically improving them.

On the other hand I can hardly go back to Sonic 3D Blast after the Director's Cut.

I get you , why have the fans do the job of the devs? Why need mods to make the game playable? But sometimes like most games made in eastern europe you have this awesome gameplay that is pretty rough around the edges and could use some fixing

I can understand for smaller games.

But an AAA company should have enough funds to debug their stuff.

Players are becoming voluntary beta testers with Early Access (and pre-patched games at launch) without even getting paid...

Yes companies should be held in higher regard and expect them to finish stuff...

Good thought about the early access one

Modding has been the most important part of the PC gaming industry. Every major success nowadays is based in some way or the other on the modding efforts of the community.

CSGO is a mod. DOTA is a mod. Roblox is just a sandbox for mods. Fortnite is a sandbox for mods.

Steam, Epic and GOG were literally build on their success. A good part of today's AAA industry is only based on paywalling mods.
