The SNES/SFC had the best scaling hardware in a home console and got the Super FX chip later in its life to build limited 3D into games. The N64 was the most robust 3D hardware on the market, but even that console was starting to lose what made Nintendo special from the perspective of their developers. And then GameCube… it’s a solid piece of hardware. But that’s all it really is. No frills, no gimmicks, just raw power. But, even then, the XBox has that power and THEN SOME, plus a hard drive that allowed for custom soundtracks and faster loading. I still love the cube. I don’t hate the games you hate. And I think it’s probably the console with the best U.S. made software from Nintendo’s first party studios, actually. But, I see where you’re coming from. You can read in interviews: Nintendo’s developers were kind of stumped with this console. Nintendo’s devs love to solve a puzzle, but the GameCube is a puzzle that comes pre-solved. Many first party titles had to end up manufacturing a problem to get made (lets design a racing game around one button, let’s make the game world require a hose, let’s make traversing the world map half the game where you end up sailing, etc.) Nintendo is frustrating. They don’t work well outside of a box. They can ONLY think outside of the box, so when they aren’t given a box to be confined by, they kinda fall apart. And it shows, because that generation is the one where they had the least amount of impact on game development across the world. You’ve heard people talk about taking inspiration from Mario 64, but how many have said the same for Sunshine? Or Odama? Or Kirby’s Airride? The GameCube was all about games that made problems to solve because the hardware wasn’t giving Nintendo any such issues. No restrictions sounds great on paper, but it’s bad for artists of a certain type because they need to be restricted in some way to be creative. [automerge]1746923173[/automerge] An addendum to my already long post: This same reason is why the Wii U sucked, and don’t let Twitter or whatever else fool you. I had one AS A CHILD. I supported one AS A CHILD. And even AS A CHILD, I saw that the Gamepad made more problems than it ever solved. The entire SYSTEM was designed around trying to create a problem to solve, and was loaded down with so many disparate gimmicks that had no cohesion. The 3DS almost suffered a similar fate! But it was able to pull itself together through some fun main line titles and the Third Parties making a lot of the best software (Nintendo made games on 3DS were often boring, sadly) [/QUOTE]
