where did the arrow keys + Z X control scheme come from?
a lot of 2d games on pc use that :B

i know that its been there for a long time, thats what the pc-98 touhou games used, but i just wonder, when did it start, because in the first 2 prince of persia's it used the arrow keys + shift and control and those games were made in the late 80s-early 90s, so im going to assume the control scheme was established in the mid 90s, but i wonder where did it first start getting used? That key scheme was in place even during the 90's, I remember using that to play the old duke nukem games, the 2d ones, on my then windows 95 desktop, I was 7 and it was an older machine that the brand spanking new windows 98!!
I'd think it's just the layout as it fit to a keyboard, and what was most comfortable became a standard, especially given that the qwerty layout is simply to stop typewriters jamming and it was carried over because it was advertised as replacing a typewriter. I would just think it was a matter of "well, the directional buttons are here already on the right side, might as well use those, now, what about the other buttons, fuck it, these will do!" There definitely was, maybe, 5 seconds of though put into it.
from my understand the WASD became standard because of some tournament player that used it and it became popular, however most 2d pixelart games dont have tournaments or stuff like that, theyre mostly single player, so how did the arrow keys + Z X scheme even happen?I bet there's some deep esoteric lore about this too if one would care to dive deep enough but I'm sure it's mostly just a somewhat logical arrangement of keys to rest your hands on.
my god, that reminds me of playing a bunch of 90s 3d first-person PC games (thief, deus ex etc)I don't know the actual history behind it, but after playing games that used weird combinations for controls on the commodore 64, I'm glad that and wasd became generally agreed upon. There were commodore games where the keys weren't together and it's just hard to wrap your head around. Left and right is O and P, but up and down are E and X or something weird like that.
I was actually wondering whete wasd came from, thanks for clearing that up for me :D.i know that its been there for a long time, thats what the pc-98 touhou games used, but i just wonder, when did it start, because in the first 2 prince of persia's it used the arrow keys + shift and control and those games were made in the late 80s-early 90s, so im going to assume the control scheme was established in the mid 90s, but i wonder where did it first start getting used?

what sucks is that i had an uhm lets say "weaker" laptop growing up (still do, but its a bit better now), so i was mostly playing keyboard focused 2d games that my laptop could run, almost never played FPS games unless it was the first half life, so i already wasnt used to playing FPS games, so the confusing control schemes those games was kinda torture for me TwT
personally i only play games with a controller ONLY if it needs toI was actually wondering whete wasd came from, thanks for clearing that up for me :D.
I remember playing those prince of persia games on my windows machine as a Kid, it was amazing if you had not played any actual console platformers, which most pc desktop users did not. It was the same kinda thing with half-life, it was only amazing if you ignore system shock and goldeneye.
I only now, will be getting a decent gaming machine so I can finally play tron 2.0, I could never play it as my machine had a lot of power but integrated graphics which suck. Long story short, I was developing a music store for a phone app that was being emulated on my laptop for my mobile app dev module, and it kept crashing and being extremely slow. Also my computer security lecturer mentioned how fast decryption and encryption are on a gaming laptop, because I develop things, not just do basic programming, I need a better machine. I now need a gaming machine so I can do the things that need to be done. I can also play twilight princess and wind waker on it too, since Nintendo won't let me buy these games on my switch.
That all said, I will be playing all these games with a controller!
Console gaming on a gaming laptop is still console gaming! Wind waker HD in 4k!
It's likely not known exactly who decided on the zx and directional keys, it's actually the settings in these old games too, as in the standard mapped keys, I recall it in some of those old games.
i use it on every 2d game thats not a fast-paced platformer!I kinda still use this scheme on some games, Im already used to it.
