I want to play modern SEGA games

Did you have played yakuza other than Sonic?

I've never had the chance to play this series or any of the other IPs released outside Sega's classic consoles. I'm keen to get started, hence my question as to the best way to do so.

Do you still own these consoles? Did you play only these games all these years? You could've just bought a budget pc and emulated stuff.

Steam deck works better in your case because there's always Sega-inspired indie games on pc. Also, emulation.

Out of these: Space Channel 5, Jet Set Radio and Shenmue are the most worth checking out imo. Honorable mention goes to Crazy Taxi and Nights

I only own the Genesis, the rest is essentially emulation on my Android phone. I'm a huge Sega fan, so most of the games I've played in recent years have been on their old consoles.

I think that's the answer , For example, you won't find visual novels projects like The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog on recent consoles.

I've already tried Space Channel on an emulator and my god it's horrible hard. Apparently the timing is just straight up incorrect sometimes, and the best experience would be to play it on CRT, which unfortunately I don't have.

I don't know how I feel about Ash from PSO being the character provided alongside the Phantasy Star logo

Did Billy Hatcher ever show up anywhere other than on GC?

I find myself thinking about other alternatives for enjoying SEGA games.
Puyo Pop Fever. 22 years isn't that old, and you can play this relatively everywhere. But I suggest PS2 as Puyo Puyo Fever 2 is also on there, so you can get both sides of the coin.

Sega Rally Revo, Anarchy Reigns, Alpha Protocol, Valkyrie Chronicles 1 and Yakuza games. With a Steam Deck you can play most of them i think. Or a ps3 :P
I also prefer the Sonic racing all stars game that is not the transformed one

After the disappointment of the new Nintendo, I find myself thinking about other alternatives for enjoying SEGA games. In your opinion, what is the best current console/sytem for this? I may be planning to buy a steam deck, do you think that would do the trick?
Xbox series S for me cuz it runs sonic unleashed 60fps, one of my favorite sonic games haha :)
Amongst other Sega classics!
It’s really cheap too, cheaper than a switch 2 for sure, especially if you’re fully digital like me haha

Steam deck is great! I have it too, I play sonic 3 air on it, as well as a plethora of Sega titles. Was really affordable for me too, very much worth it especially if you emulate!

TBH, emulation via Steam Deck. SEGA dropped a whole bunch of their retro games (including some that weren't ever officially emulated before) a while back but took it away in December. This also isn't even mentioning the IPs that got abandoned like Stella Glow, Rhythm Thief, Infinite Space, MadWorld, Rad Mobile (which is so funny that the first ever game Sonic appeared in has never left Arcade and Saturn), etc.

PC/Steam Deck are the go-to.

Though, unfortunately, Sega's infatuation with the Denuvo snake oil puts a bit of a damper on Steam Deck users with how you need to occasionally check in to authentication servers to launch a game. Not every time, but it's unpredictable and annoying.

I would still go with that or any PC capable of playing some games. Especially with stuff like AIR, emulation, PSO Blue Burst, PSO2, and the unofficial Sonic Unleashed PC port recently coming out.

Yeah Steamdeck, the upcoming Lenovo Legion GO with SteamOS installed on it, or just getting a cheap pc running a Linux solution that runs in Steam OS' Gamemode or if you want to go emulation crazy running Batocera.

As many have said, most modern SEGA games are built to target the PC or PS5.

One thing to keep in mind is that, wherever SEGA fumbles, the fans are sure to follow with something special. Especially for Sonic. I’m a console gamer through and through, but it would be foolish to not let you know the amazing things you can play on even a lower end computer. Mods for the Sonic Adventure games are some of the highest quality fan mods I’ve ever seen. Restoration work to Dreamcast classics like Crazy Taxi. I’m fairly sure that even the Steam release of NiGHtS has fan made mod support.

SEGA may abandon and mistreat their amazing software history, but the fans love it. And many of them cherish presenting it in the best possible way. Do a Quick Look around and you’ll find some amazing stuff. Don’t discount the PS5 DualSense though! It’s rather expensive, yes, and does have unreliability issues, but it’s my favorite controller I’ve ever held, with both features and feel that I can’t imagine playing certain games with almost any other way.

One final note: emulation is your friend. Do not believe the rumors that emulation for systems like the Saturn require high end hardware. That nonsense narrative only applies to systems like the PS3, and stronger hardware from the eighth generation and above, thanks in large part to reliance on stronger CPU hardware to handle accurate computations. For any and all SEGA systems, as well as many of their arcade games, doing research and putting time into setting up an emulator properly is the best way to go. This is not to dissuade you from a PS5, as I still believe many of the games Sony has ported to PC are still best played on the system they were originally designed for (without PC port technical issues and unwanted Sony registration), but for SEGA stuff, the fans do what the company itself does not.

And yes, that applies to their modern titles. Mods are there for them too. Have fun!
