i think people are far too hasty to place the blame on others instead of themselves when it comes to older games.

I agree that games can be meaningful and whatnot, but let's be honest, most of the time they are simple entertainment. Many of the beloved games from 90s and early 00s have the depth of a popcorn flick. And there is nothing wrong with that, my problem is this pretentious attitude people have, as if people are literally missing enlightenment for not wanting to deal with tank controls or long loading times. If a game feels more like a chore, I’d honestly rather put that patience into a hobby that actually gives something back, like learning an instrument or something, you don't have to prove anything by playing games you don't like.
well said. my apologies for any misunderstandings

I, too, am spoiled on exponentially-increased depth in more modern gaming n QoL considerations (but emus do have tools to help that out)... I just kinda balance the 2 according to mood n both mental/physical health concerns that I wish wouldn't be a factor, but I suppose I'm lucky to still be able to handle intense gaming at my age n hopefully goin into the future FFS - scary shit as these mortality caveats start to creep in to affect pure enjoyment n interfacing with art formats I've always loved n have literally saved my life time n time again

This is why i play games that actually are good regardless of age, if i can show Supercubedudez to someone that plays Fortnite or Godd of War Ragnarok and they find it fun despite not even existing when the console came, then it did passed the test of time

"i tried playing a well-loved game from 2001 for the first time in 2025, but i'm not nostalgic for it like everyone else, so i didn't like it." in my experience with games and books etc, the real culprit is often impatience. if something has a reputation for being One Of The Best, i tend to have this expectation it will impress me more quickly. this is a mistake. you need to meet a game where it's at, try your hardest to pretend it's a new release, to forget any praise you've heard about it. you may still end up disliking the game, and that's a valid opinion to have, but nostalgia is a lazy rebuttal, which doesn't even attempt to address why reviewers and players liked a game on release. there can't be nostalgia attached to a new release.

Sometimes it is not even the medium's fault, but the person's strange expectation over it, like, I have seen this a lot of times not only on games, but movies, books and specially anime, the person sees that something is regarded as one of a kind or a promising release, however instead of searching about its genre, content, date of release, synopsis or just watching a gameplay/trailer, they project their interpretation on the little information they have on the content, creates some expectation on that interpretation, expects it to fit their worldview, but when they see the media have almost nothing to do with it, they criticize and bash it, like instead of taking 5 minutes of research to get a more precise overview, but because they see that as a waste of time, they end up wasting 1 to 10 hours on something that just don't fit their taste.

The sad part is when it actually fits their taste, but because of that haste of consume without checking it out and feeling betrayed but their own wrong ideas, they mark it as bad and never give it a new chance

I really appreciate you pointing out people making assumptions based on a lack of information, and then being upset because it didn't match them.

I also like that you pointed out that this transcends games specifically. I have a bad habit of picking up movies to watch with friends based on a single set of gifs made by a friend. Not once has the movie ever aligned to my interpretation of it based on the gifs, but I have a good time because I'm intentionally choosing to go in with no information. So, I don't trust my preconceived interpretations, but I do know that there will at least be a couple snippets of the film that I like hahahaha

Oh, thank you, you made my day, this was kind of a frustration I have since I first noticed that pattern years ago, since then this type of behavior just increased, so I was kinda of expecting this to be treated as a hot topic.

Also, I don't see a problem trying to watch something as a first contact or not searching too much to avoid spoilers, depending on the media and situation, it makes it better, like watching a trash movie with friends on discord.

But unfortunately, most people don't do that in a sane way as you, when I see a review of something I like, and it comes from that type of interpretation, man, it makes my blood boil, because, when a person dislike it, but had honest expectations on that, it is okay, taste is very personal and sometimes a negative, but honest, review can show you another side of you couldn't catch as a fan, but this, OMG, this, it is a disrespect with both the fans and the original creator
