I only got a platinum trophy for one game and didn't even like the game that much...

Hey guys, here's a long story/rant that I just wanted to share to see if anybody can relate to with similar anecdotes about this game or others like it lol. Also, I'm sorry if you absolutely loved this game - I'm happy you did and I will certainly talk about the things I like about it with you in the comments too lol.

I didn't like the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy very much at all. I kept getting frustrated that they were following through with that series and those characters and was SO exhausted with it. Final Fantasy XIV is awesome but it's a different beast entirely. When FFXV was FINALLY announced, I was so damn hyped, I pre-ordered it as soon as I could and my brother and I would just sit there and fantasize about how awesome it was going to be. I thought the demos they released were super cool and the anticipation kept building. All of these great set pieces and small scenarios, and I don't even know how the main story is going to work all this together.

It turns out, they did not do work it all together. In fact, the majority of the important character moments and lore were to be sold separately, with nothing but grindy fetch quests and "bounties" with no plot or context like the awesome Behemoth demo hunt filling the majority of the game time. I didn't know that most of the game's setup was distributed in supplemental material like an excruciatingly dull movie. The map was massive and empty, and fast traveling caused load times that matched the damn travel time of just walking from point A to point B.

I didn't know about all this supplemental material, and I just jumped into the game day one of its release. I just kept playing and playing trying to squeeze every little drop of this thing. It was the first real new traditional FF in years damn it! I must be missing something, right? So I suffer through every load time, EVERY single side quest and bounty hunt, every side boss... There were never any cutscenes or story arcs tied to them - pure busy work. I just kept digging through this mound of dog turds looking for corn. All I found was more poop.

I'll be shocked if anybody actually reads this, but I'd love to get your memories of games you absolutely tried your very hardest to love. I know it's my fault, and I'm being hard on a game that's still honestly not like, a terrible game. It's just so frustratingly fragmented and patched together, and I see the ingredients of something excellent in it.

The flying car you unlock at the end IS tight.

FFXV is truly a wild beast of a game. It was announced when I was 10 and released when I was 21, I waited over half my damn life for it! That initial playthrough was such a rollercoaster of emotions. Loved it for the first few chapters and then went back and forth between liking and hating it until the credits rolled. The relationship and dialogue between the Chocobros made the game more than bearable for me, but try as I might I've never been able to replay the game as I just get incredibly bored and disheartened. I know that with the DLC, free patches and Royal Edition upgrades it is a far more cohesive product, but I just can't shake those feelings I have from when it launched.

You're definitely not alone in feeling mixed and harsh about that game! Felt like every flash of brilliance the game had was surrounded by drab, incoherent rubbish...

I'm glad that I can at least have some nostalgia for those opening chapters. I was so in love with the idea of just going on a roadtrip with the fellas that its all I really remember when I look back on the game. The movie was pretty good too.

I'll keep periodically trying to replay it and I hope that when I finally do last long enough to make it all the way through again that I come away with a far more positive disposition. I learned to love FFXIII and Halo 5's campaign after years of apprehension, so anything is possible!

Wow, I never knew this existed. Could never get too far into 15 no matter how many times I tried.

I feel the same way you do about all those games. Before 13 came out I believed SquareEnix could do no wrong and only released the best games. It was the first time I was really disappointed by my favorite company. I played it again a few years ago and without the hype and expectations I thought it was decent. That's about it though.

Good on you for the platinum. I can't even do that with games I love!

Yes the opening chapters of XV had me too. There were absolutely excellent things in that game, no doubt. "Every flash of brilliance the game had was surrounded by drab, incoherent rubbish" - this is the perfect summation of how I see it lol.

Also, my thoughts on XIII (the first of the series, I still can't jive with the rest lol) has warmed a bit in ways. One thing I will say and have always said is that FFXIII's OST is absolutely brilliant. Masashi Hamauzu is one of the all time greats and I feel like he always gets put on weird games where he isn't seen the way he should be haha.

Me neither lol. It's a testament to how desperate I was to find something that wasn't there lmao

Oh how relatable this is, good read. So is this like if you expect something more from the game? Interesting…

Now, this could apply to any games I've played whether it's a shooter, platformers, puzzles, etc. But one that pop up in my head is Monster Hunter: World

I'm the same as you, liking the game and loving the franchise as a whole. But I have this feeling like, dissatisfied? Like the game ends too fast

Sure there's side quests and all that, but I was expecting something…more challenging? Maybe it's because of the mechanics but at the same time, it felt like the monster was weak

Even something like Safi'Jiva, Fatalis and literally the Behemoth doesn't feel like they're powerful, like they're nerfed or something

I think this is why I've played the traditional one instead from the 3DS and the PSP. Maybe it's because almost every monsters (on high rank and above) I've encountered are either feral af or just complete Insanity (especially those hitboxes)

And that's what made them frightening and just…madness y'know? But that's just me of course, maybe I'm just used to the old ways, liking how those monsters give zero fucks then team tagging me and maybe it's actually more enjoyable for the others to enjoy the new ones

Man I feel that in my soul. I must’ve done this at some point with something. Have you tried 16 and if so, would you recommend it? I trust your judgement

I'm with ya. My brother and I love playing Monhun games together. I'm probably not as big a fan as you are, but we had been playing since 3 and really enjoyed how things worked. World forces so many unskippable and not very interesting cutscenes on you all the time and you're sitting there waiting on your buddy to get through his and the pacing in multiplayer is just ruined lol. It's definitely a beautiful game, and still a good time, but it felt like it got in your way more than the others.

16 looks pretty cool. But I haven't upgraded to next gen yet. Nothing has excited me enough to invest. I'd like to get my hands on these new Silent Hill games coming out, and I know other stuff is still to come. Honestly though, I get more fun out of exploring the "Repo" these days.

GAWD I forgot about her. I'm thinking they made World with this big budget and sick graphics expecting it to attract a new fan base. That's awesome and I'm not inherently against that. I think they were worried about the learning curve and tried to tutorialize things and give the game more context and a more cinematic appeal to get people pulled in and acclimated. However, I think they swung too hard in that direction. Not being able to skip the cutscenes is just excruciating.

Yeah that's true, I think they ended up making it too easy even for newcomers
