I have a really hard time holding down a job. I have bipolar that is constantly being managed and monitored, so it's hard to add a job on top of that and everything else I do around the house.
I've worked food service and retail in the past, so finding a job isn't terribly hard, but I do poorly in customer facing jobs. I always get complaints that I'm 'mean' because I don't do the fake smile ass-kissing thing that people expect from those positions.
When I have a flare up, I'm really hard to work with. Jobs don't consider mental health issues to be a real condition, so they don't allow me to call off if I'm having an off couple of days because of my cycling.
Work is never a great thing but its somehow necessary to not only get experience in life and about our society but even to improve your skills , learn to think out of the box to get more efficient , getting connections with people that could help you with some problems , getting a reality check or a reflection what kind of person you actually are and even give you inspirations while you doing your daily deeds .
Im working in a Gas-station in germany and my pay isnt the best but still enough to get around .
I like my job somehow . Yeah i have days which i go full misanthropist but still keeping my cool , got customers that are absolute idiots or almost braindead on that matter and getting bombarded by customers because its a weekend / holiday / rush-hour . But i appreciate to do something , can interact with the people and on nightshifts i have the quite time to get my inspirations , plannings , thoughts organised while playing my music to cleaning , refilling and checking everything up in the store .
I could get a better job and maybe i should do but overall i know i do something to get some money , know everything i must do and am very efficient about it .
Work aint never about fun . Its about getting money , honing your skills , learn new things and understand the realities how the society is . Im all for meritocracy .

Im forced to pay it but i still hope those politicians chokes on the cents from my hard earned money and see their own demise of their greedy life . Backstabbing actual great artists and letting great small Independent stores , companies and developers bleeding out while hiding cowardly behind the rhethoric of " doing for the good of our society " for a way too long time and squeezing every honest citizen out of their honestly hard-worked money .
Im happy for the author of the video, and I dont think he even missed the "age target", it is easy to get lost and all plans you might have usually goes south in the first "reallity check" when you try to apply them.
The things about jobs is that they pay you for a reason: In the same way you hate to wake up in the morning, the guy that pick ups the trash also hate it. But he do it because he is being payed to do so, and we need him.
Now there is a way to get purpose on your work and that what the author of this video found, he saw the impact of hist work and that awesome, other people will just be happy in having a way get money to live and enjoy his or her hobbies.
Oh, that's a painful topic for me. I almost never worked in my life and I'm definitely suffering my whole life because of the consequences. You can't afford anything, you rely on others all the time, you most likely have no friends because everybody sees you as a loser, and all of this gets worse and worse with years.
I'm actually not lazy, I taught myself English from scratch to C2 level and even more languages and I definitely could've used it to my advantage and apply for some jobs, but I'm just hopeless really. I also noticed, I have serious problems maintaining relationships with people, I can get upset at something and just cut all of the connections (literally just did it today ), it can't be helped with me.
Of course I've diagnosed with different mental disorders throughout my life, which was definitely a contributing factor to the whole situation.
While I had some kind of "Oh shit I got to do something with myself or just die like this", I actually got nothing lasting from it and ended up worse mentally.

The Rich get richer and the poor get poorer and working a slave job is not changing it only enriches those suits not you.
The Best thing you could hope for is working Independent but most can't the system is Evil and screwing you over go not under with the System but opt out of it if possible.
Also you could say I get a Job when I can keep the money I work for without a government goon taking it from me with a gun in his Hand and when those who make the laws finally start following them themselves without making a fucking cast system.

Its a problem in many Nations I assume the Politicians don't consider us there own kin they seem themselves as the new Aristocracy and they behave like that many even getting away with crimes where happened to many times.
Germany is fucked to put it mildly German once was the Land of the Dichter and Denker but now its the land of Greed and Slaves the sad thing is our mentality that enables it the German endures much and follows orders even if he hates them you need a lot of shit constantly until the German resists and rises.
The French and other people are better in that regard you can't push as much shit on them until they revolt and good on them.
To give a overview barely any Tax Money is used in Germany that we have to pay our streets break apart and are badly damaged our buildings our outdated we barely have any bomb shelters in case of a war we don't keep them in tact at all the fall apart.
And now our Politicians plan to enact a new forced conscription into the Military as not enough people sign up to be killed for the Politicians I hate it here so much and worse thing nothing we can do about it as no matter who you vote they never keep there words and still stay in position.
And the Goons in Blue do follow every order no matter if they break there own god damn laws in doing so as long as the orders come from the higher ups.
That got a bit frustrating and Political but sometimes I can't help it as the Situation is so shitty over here and all you can hear is vote Harder and I am sure Party B will keep there promises this time around.

Sounds like he lucked out on finding work that fulfills him. That's not an option for everyone.
Most people are going to end up in jobs they hate. It's not because they didn't try hard enough but because educational, financial, and economic limitations prevent them from leaving something stable to explore their options. I think the OP is taking his ability to shop around for granted. I sure as hell didn't get to explore that much in my twenties: I was homeless and couch-surfing, trying to find a stable place to live, never mind a stable income. I'm much better off now than I was then but that improvement had nothing to do with "finding my purpose".
I know what I want to do with my life. The problem is that the things I want to do require time and money investments with no likely ROI. I want to do these things because I love them but they're not going to contribute to my financial stability. Knowing this, I have to prioritize a job I don't care about because money is how I survive. It's how everyone survives.
What OOP is bemoaning isn't a personal failing. It's a societal one.
As someone who spent way too long struggling with the symptoms of MDD because I didn't realize anything was wrong, yes, it sounds exactly like that.
You know what stopped my intrusive thoughts and suicidal ideation? Prescription drugs. Nothing else has come even close. Seriously, I cannot stress how important it is to get evaluated by a psychiatrist if anyone feels like they can't function in their day-to-day life. There's no amount of self-help or motivational speeches that is going to correct a chemical imbalance in the brain or help someone confront and unlearn harmful coping mechanisms.
