It is not because I do not want to.

It is more of the fact that I have been watching vintage anime like Those Who Hunt Elves and Excel Saga, while I really want to watch or finish up new age anime like Rokudo's Bad Gals and Medaka Kuroiwa. One example was that recently I wanted to watch Frieiren and Dandadan, but I never managed to do that because I keep forgetting to so so.

Has this happened to anyone else as of late?

I have a crunchyroll membership since the WiiU days and did not watch for years. Just kinda lost interest in most newer stuff. Most of it seems all the same to me and the art style does not hit like it used to back in the 80s/90s. Recently I started watching the classics again like DBZ and Naruto.

In my case, I have been trying to find some time to watch some of the deeply respected anime that most watchers truly appreciate, like Ergo Proxy and Mushishi.

Only time it seems I can find time to watch anime is through clips that are just spliced out of context, or just a compilation of anime that is filled with funny scenes. Gintama is an example of this, but that's because I really like the manga.

I could be wrong, but it seems like you're sticking to vintage because it's familiar to you. If you don’t have much time to watch anime, it makes sense to go with what you already know you'll enjoy rather than taking a chance on something newer. But maybe I'm just assuming things.

100%, current anime in this day and age follows common tropes and relies a lot on fan service to carry it, but it has it's limits and one can get burnt out on it very very easily.

This is why old school anime will always be number 1 for me, i revisit Excel saga (love that dog!), Ghost in the Shell, AKIRA, Golden boy, Macross pluss, Macross zero, RahXephone, and many more. Heck even Sword art online (season 1 only). (i know SAOL is technically recent, but season 1 was from 2012, and there where more good anime then, so i hold it in the same light). Eden of the east is another one from the 2010s, with Xam'd : Lost memories being another one from 06 which Sony launched as part of psn.

Regarding some of the good recent anime you mentioned:
I can vouch for Frieiren it has a good build up, Dandandan is also good, but it is another slow burn that has not got enough made yet. What was there is entertaining, but i would have liked more of the story told in the anime, which made me go back to the manga.

As I grew up, I also started watching less and less anime.
And keep in mind, I would literally watch anime for at least half a day almost every day when I was younger.

But I found that I enjoy japanese content in other mediums, like VNs and video games. It feels more interactive and personal to me and I enjoy it more.

I recently started playing the Steins;Gate VN and it's a lot more immersive and personal than watching the anime.

Last time I watched was just one episode of Red Ranger Isekai, which was cool. But then slowly losing interest on catching up, probably I had other interests to prioritize.

Hell yeah Gintama!

that's pretty sad. been watching gundam and just recently finished the original story with char's counterattack plus i also watched 8th team cause it was dope.

watch more anime, you only have one life. spend it well desu.

I tend to have an easier time following old shows (regardless if they're anime or not) because the tempo tends to be lower so it's easier to digest.

I watched a bunch of Sakamoto Days the other day, though.

Funny thing is that I like Yuru Yuri, and that gif is great

I've now been unemployed for 2½ month and could've easily spent at least some of all that time catching up on some of all the anime I have on my to-do list... but I haven't because YouTube is a time consuming curse.

Every year I try to commit to the resolution of ditching YouTube binging, because it depresses me to think of all the years of my life have been sucked into that black hole, and because much YouTube content is frankly just low effort attention hungry rambling that does anything but respect your time.

And yet... like an abused husband, I keep coming back. Keep coming back to the platform to let it steal away my time, never getting around to all the games I wanna play, all the movies and anime I wanna watch, and all the manga and books I wanna read.

Some day, I seriously need to just pull the plug and outright ban myself from YouTube.

The last anime I watched was My Love Story. That was about three years ago. I have read a lot of manga though. I just can't get around to watching much anime since I end up watching weird movies instead.

Idk if you are mainly watching on mobile, but maybe try apps blocker. It was what helped me a lot. Look for ScreenZen. You can set a schedule to block selected apps. I have respected my schedule for more than 100 days as of now, and I don't feel bad anymore when consuming content on YouTube or social media.

Learn the art of the blade by remembering that I have to re-read samurai manga like Vagabond
Oh man Vagabond is op! But my word is the writer / artiest burnt out, i think he was making basket ball manga for a while, and still unsure if he will go back. Unless my info on the subject is too old.

It's burnout, modern anime rarely is up to the standard of anime from the 90's, this is related to why hayao miyazaki said anime was a mistake, it's become corporatized to the point anime artists nearly face slave like conditions in some of the worst cases, after the outrage from that they started giving up a bit on that, but severely dropped the quality to crank out as many as they could, which is why anime now isn't even as good as anime from 10 years ago.

Some modern anime that avoid this is sousou no frieren/frieren the slayer, which you can tell they took their time with and is arguably the best anime to come out in the last decade, kusuriya no hitogoto/the apothecary diaries, which is probably the best anime currently airing, solo leveling, which due to being korean, has a ton more oversight to prevent it from being phoned in, and for a bit older but relatively new, stein's gate, which is a example of a visual novel done right in a anime.

I can't comment on dandadan, i didn't find it interesting, but it probably just wasn't for me.
