and i'm starting the manga now.

At first i thought i was going to see a macho man story, full of violence and blood glory, what is kinda true at first, but man... i wasn't prepared for how much MISERABLE it is. The most emotionally disgraceful story i've seen in animation and manga. I went running to the movies so i could see that Golden Arc ending expanded a little more, and it got worse (in a good sense). Poor Casca, poor Gusts. Fucking Griffith. Jesus christ.

Just finished the Black Swordsman arc now, and it keeps growing the horrors of that world. Guts is completely broken now. Absurdly broken, an asshole most of the time, actually. I'm really curious to see how they'll work and sustain a character like that through years of continuous chapters.

It's amazing! I wish i'd watched the series before.

Me too! It's a shame... at least they covered a really good and completed arc, that works pretty well as a stand alone.

Discovered recently this new animation:

Just to find out it was cancelled by copyright ?

Shame it didn't, the memorial edition did a fine job adapting the Golden Age arc, but the 97 anime is just so much better, although not perfect
The Memorial Edition/movies are too fast. They run like trying to replicate every big event but without preparing characters for them, nor developing properly its consequences. The art direction was pretty off too... :( I think they can be interesting to watch right after finishing the original series, just for the new visuals of some scenes (especially in the third movie).

Yeah anytime there's an adaptation now it's like watching a cliffnotes version of it.

I think it's alright, The original was unavailable (legally at least) where I live until a month ago, so I think the memorial edition is a perfectly okay way to experience Berserk for the first time, although pacing is indeed an issue especially on the first episodes, as for the animation, they did fix a lot of the 3d models from the original release, still they do look a bit off, miles better than Berserk (2016) tho

I LOVE Berserk (If you couldn't tell by my current pfp), it's a shame that almost no adaptation will ever truly be able to replicate the manga, but I'm glad that the manga itself has become more accessible and widespread.
Honestly it could be said about any manga.

Adaptations of any medium will never be fully representative but can offer a good interpretation of it.

That's true, I guess it just applies a bit more to Berserk due to all the difficulties studios have had adapting it

While the 97 is what introduced me to Berserk, I'll admit it has a lot of problems (especially compared to the manga) and is strictly inferior. I do like it, mind you... but the manga is just phenomenal. And since it's only the Golden Age, a veeeery small portion of the overall story, there's just so much it doesn't give.

Like so many I wish we could have seen what Miura envisioned for the rest of the series, but what we were lucky enough to get does deserve every bit of the love it earns. So many great things await you going forward.

The big thing about the 1997 anime ending the way it did is because by the time the last episode aired (31 March 1998), that was effectively covering the entire manga up to that point. Volume 14 got out mere days before it premiered (Volume 14 released on 29 September, anime started on 8 October) and Volume 15 came out literally the day after Episode 16. The next arc was only 15 chapters long by the time it was over. With how long animation took to make, there was no way anything could have been predicted after that point, what was gonna stay, what changed, etc.

Honestly? The anime ending there may have been for the best, as it certainly gives off a huge impression.

It's always nice seeing new Berserk fans but it's a shame we don't know the future of the manga. It's still going but for how much longer?

I'll sound nostalgic but the '97 anime had the best style over any other medium except the manga.
