I started playing star ocean first departure and I ended up not liking it and deleted my save and I wanted to start the second game because of how good everyone is talking about.

Never force yourself to play a game you don't enjoy. That'll only sour you on the series as a whole in my experience. This applies even more so when you're talking about fairly long RPGs.

If you're worried about missing parts of the story, just read a plot summary or look up a highlight reel or something.

Honestly you can do whatever you want with the Star Ocean series because each game is a standalone game so you can start with whichever game you want.

However what remains the same is some ancient civilization and how they affected the universe just as a simple lore element, but honestly they are trivial aspect of the series that never "talked about" in the series. You sometimes find stuff about them and that's it. They exist or not doesn't matter but it just gives you an idea to imagine what probably happened before all these. People sometimes hyped about this ancient civilization and wanna play the series in detail to learn about it but they are all disappointed. They just use that BS for empty hype and in future they can use it as a way to make money from the series if they run out of ideas lol.

But what you may wanna know is all games shares the same theme just because it's the identity of the series, but what each game is about and therefore what kind of game they are is different in each game. That's why you may try other games and finally find the game in the series you like. For example I like Star Ocean 4 instead.

I agree with RustySK -- never force yourself to play a game.
I like both 1 & 2 but 2 is commonly considered the best in the series. I'd go with Second Evolution.

I was playing first departure, and in general, I actually liked, but droped it cause its random encunters. It piss me off being forced to fight literally every two steps and not being able to advance to the next objective.

Then play Star Ocean 4. No random encounters and it's like anime of Star Trek lol.

iirc they removed the random encounters in Star Ocean 2: Second Story R. (the new remake)
That version was really good imo
