As a person that has been using emulators from very early on, Ares confuses me somewhat. Specifically, none of the smoothing filters I like to use seem to work, mostly just computationally expensive multi-layered presets I don't want are the ones that do work.

Am I missing files despite having downloaded straight from source? is there a setting I'm missing? what gives?
Thanks!

Tried it out with a new download of Ares, comparing how say, SuperEagle works on Snes9x on Retroarch, it's not working as intended. I looked over the github, it's a bit over my head but my understanding is that while Librashader allows for some compatibility of slang shaders with Ares, it's not a perfect plug and play solution.

The shader files match what you would use on other emulators, so I don't think it's anything you're doing wrong with settings.

I see, thank you. I kind of wish Mesen would integrate Mega Drive/Genesis at this point. It's so nice to use.

By the way, if you want something maybe a bit easier, try Bizhawk

It's built specifically for computers and it's not a hassle to use (for me at least), just a suggestion though

I appreciate your thoughtfulness, but Bizhawk doesn't have the filters I like to use.

Most of the fun shaders out there are made by the community for Retroarch (or at least Libretro I guess), but if that interface is annoying you could use a different frontend to navigate instead. Launchbox, Playnite, one of those.

As much as i hate to say it, your best bet is retroarch, saying this as someone who's not fond of retroarch btw, the genesis emulation on retroarch is superior in this case.

If your just playing genesis, you might be able to get away with kega fusion though, i believe it supports shaders and is for the most part fine as long as it's just genesis, though it does have a (easily fixable) crash issue on windows 10 and up due to microsoft stupidity.

The nightly builds come with all kinds of filters @ https://github.com/ares-emulator/ares/releases/tag/nightly
