Like I fucking LOVE JRPGS and Xeno-series, so for like as long as I remember playing JRPGs I was expecting to play xenogears, the story here is in the start (I'm in the desert city) but like I can't play more than like 30 minutes a day because I dunno the combat being like 1 hit ko enemies, the cities feel dead and just being a bunch of fetch quests, I just want to know when this game will get really interesting or is just the story that is the good part

I think you're describing the conundrum that is the general consensus about the game. The narrative is an absolute trip. There is a ton to chew on there. Sadly there are some ROUGH slogs when the plot isn't moving though lol. I personally think the juice is worth the squeeze but some of the dungeon designs are exhausting and the combat (especially in the mechs) doesn't really fully take advantage of the cool ideas it brings together often enough.

The things that you're describing and experiencing that have you bouncing off the game are what keep it a cult classic and not a unanimous instant obvious masterpiece to everybody. You'll probably have to really get sucked in by the story, art direction, and music moreso than the rpg grind, pacing, and mechanics. I bounced off the game a couple times at the same place each time, and when I broke through that area there were enough cool plot pieces moving to get me through but man - I understand where you're coming from lmao.

I'm sure you already know about the game's development history, but if not - you should look up some stuff about it because it's interesting and at least gives some context as to why it's got such a hit and miss execution.

Oooh I didn't know it was a consensus, I dunno if I'm in such a niche cult bubble that I thought for everyone this is like THE BEST PS1 GAME, but like 10 minutes after I posted this I started having fun with the game lmao. I have to reread the development history because I forgot the details lmao.

I guess I'm not the authority on it to say it's a consensus, to be fair, and I'm sure you'll be seeing some passionate posts with varying degrees of takes. It's one I've always seen painted as a flawed classic that could have really been greater than it is given more time and resources.

Gears and the Saga trilogy went through development hell and it shows, but I greatly enjoy them all for the most part. I can see why somebody would get turned off from them for sure though. I'm glad you're starting to warm up to Gears! Just be prepared for some dips and rises in quality lmao.

If you have no interest in Religious/Biblical themes, it will never get better story wise for you.
I'm playing mostly because I love the way Japan uses Biblical references (and obviously all of the xeno involved motives) the story is the only thing until now that kept me coming back lmao
