Seeing as a lot of people mention that they haven't used one in years during their introductions, I thought it would be fun to ask when they first posted on a board.

Me, personally? I joined my first one in August of 2004, right after I had emailed the webmaster of its partner site about something, and he told me to ask that on the forums (bit of an arse move, looking back XD).

What about you?

My answer is sadly kinda lame because I was a forum lurker and not a user. This changed in 2024. I thought forums seemed harsh back in 2012 so I didn’t wanna contribute to any of the conversations but now I feel i should’ve taken the plunge anyways.

Maybe that's a good thing man, maybe you've avoid it for long enough until you found the one that are actually comfortable to be at

Exactly! There was a LOT of toxicity around boards when there were a ton of them, too.

Some were so bad that even I couldn't stand it. I'd say it's a good thing that both of you waited until RGT became an option, because this kind of atmosphere was never the rule, particularly for a board of this size.

I’ve been using forums since 2016 but not much I’m just a lurker a wallflower if I may especially when a friendly discussion turns hostile. Glad a place like this still exists.
I'm really glad for that too, it's a place that almost everyone needed

True that! I knew there was something different about this one, felt no pressure in typing…even some mistakes

Over the years I have utilized many forums but only as a lurker. This is the second forum I have actually contributed to.. The first was a Warhammer tabletop forum because I needed input and info when I was getting back into painting minis. That would have been around 2005 or 2006.

I used one in 2000 ish ? A french emulation forum called Planet-Emulation.

And one for the game Blazblue about 15 years ago.

And that's pretty much it.
I have used Planet-Emulation for rom gathering :)

Wow that's long! Really nice seeing so many forum veterans here ::bigboss

Since 2010 or so, registered on your competing site (gbatemp), then around 2020 I was no longer able to log in, having to register again with another nickname. There I saw all sorts of crazy things, several translation projects born and then inexplicably abandoned, and then following with interest the development of emulators and FPS ports for psp and DS consoles.
I must say that there the users were less touchy and susceptible than here, as strange as it may seem, and with its site mods, some much more severe than here, I never had problems regarding my infamous "passive-aggressive" attitude (masochism?!? Nahhh, if anything, I'm the opposite 😎).

My friends and I had this forum before many of you were born.

Talking about Planet Emulation made me want to check it out and it's quite dead now 😅

Weirdly it makes me a little sad, I though some new generation would be chilling in there.

Are there any old forum you used to go too that ended up being dead ? 😢

That reminds me of that banana site (this one

), I discovered so many great stuff there

The very first web site where I remember creating an account (Juegomania) on June 2010 was about video games for consoles (there were some downloadable ROMs as well), and it had a forum where I was active for a year or two, until someone suggested to erase everything on the forum to start it from scratch, and nowadays the site is basically dead.

I've tried many forums created with Foroactivo on 2010 as well, but I've stayed on none for long.

I've created an account on Romxhacking (now dead) and on RHDN at the beginning of 2012 to publish my translations of dubious quality, but I have actually never used the forums. And now I'm here (since December 2024) using a forum again.

Been an active member of the sherdog forums since 2012 or so and have been a lurker on many others before then. People who are new to this are already treating it like reddit, which is a bit sad. But I reckon it'll even out eventually when they get bored.

G-Masters, my beloved.
I joined back when NDS ROMs were just getting dumped. Before that, I only used IRC and various places where I didn't need an account.
Hell, I still do when I can get away with it.

I was very active on a number of Advance Wars fan forums in the mid 00's which was effectively my introduction to the web as a whole. Around the end of the decade I mostly migrated away from forums and moved to image boards, newsgroups, and irc channels that were focused on music and videogames - but I'd occasionally browse and post on the gamefaqs and polycount forums. Fast forward to the 2020s and I found myself craving the slower pace and sense of community that comes with a forum. I hung around selectbutton for a while but never really felt at home there - and now I'm here!
