Among other things, we have to leave the dish drying rack as filled and inaccessible as possible, cover the trash can lid to make it likewise unwalkable, religiously dispose of sliced cheese wrappers, hide our bags of washed recyclables we haven't put outside yet, and occasionally just clear of clutter and mop a large section of the floor, and we're growing tired of it.

Assert your dominance and pee back at it. /j

Behavioral problems like that almost always stem from a health issue or an environment issue the cat is trying to solve.

A vet check for UTIs would be a good first step, especially if the cat is male. If the cat's bill of health is clean, then it's probably something in the home environment spurring the behavior. Are there other animals the cat shares living spaces with? How many litter boxes are there? Are the boxes cleaned regularly? Also, is this an indoor-only cat or indoor-outdoor?

As the dancing skeleton above me says. Definitely get your cat checked for health issues.
