In the style of Wizardry or Ultima. I've only modded personal FF8 game kernal strings using Doomtrain and Carbuncle, and used pre-existing mods for games like Dark Souls and Skyrim. Any help would be appreciated, as my knowledge is limited.

I've been dabbling with using Aseprite and importing my stuff into a 2d Unity project. I have zero coding skill, but if you talk it out with AI enough they can usually script out what you're trying to accomplish

Are there free alternatives to Unity or Aseprite? (I could actually search that myself...) I am actually disabled with very little income. Thank you for replying, it gave me a way forward.

Unity is free, not sure on an aseprite replacement, but if you wanted to instead try messing around with 3d models you could just use unity on its own in a 3d project, then if you feel like making more complicated models, download Blender which is also free. Just throwing some ideas out there

Doesn't unity charge commission for its product usage?

Unless you make over a huge amount of money, then Unity doesn't care. It's like..50,000 or 100,000? You'd have to look that up. But for your first game, you probably don't need to worry about making millions of dollars

Do I have to try and make money with my game if I use Unity? I'd rather not make a profit or market the game in any way, and only retain it for my own casual enjoyment.

you titled this as wanting to make a hack, you get sued into oblivion for the next several lifetimes if you tried to monetize a hack of a regular game, let alone a final fantasy game.
hacks are usually free, unless someone is paying you to make it for them; which seems to be a thing; but i think it is usually called a donation or something. i'm not sure how that works, just seen stuff like that over on gamebanana.
but going by what you said that you wanted to do, it seems more like you want to create a new game using older games as a reference. and its for your own amusement.
so, no. you don't have to try and make money with your idea. you can try doing that afterwards with what you learn by doing this to make an original game.

Basically, no. You can release everything you make for free! I'm just saying if you decided to make something and sell it and it makes like, 1000000 then Unity is gonna want a cut of that lol. But it's a big number. You could theoretically make a hundred bucks and no one cares for example

But that's with Unity in mind and of course without using any prior IPs

Thank you so much! It seems I was pretty confused about the whole thing!

As for romhacking itself. Id also like to know. It sounds like you want to put Masters of the Universe into Ultima for example
