I have been noticing a lot lately with threads some users will come just to crap the thread up with arguing or completely derailing. Getting a little off subject is more okay than beginning essay measuring contests that are completely off topic and could have their own thread. That and coming into a regular healthy thread and dumping on it and making it weird for all involved. Anyone can report posts if its getting too edgy it goes without posting anything on the thread. Makes it difficult to make a thread lately with many occurences of this.

This can be better as a suggestion for mods to disallow a user from engaging with a thread if they are known for causing unnessaday heat within a thread. Instead of just warning them immediately, not allowing them to participate in a thread is a better alternative

A lot of users to regulate that tbh, Itโ€™d be cool to see though!

I think you posted in the wrong sub-forum.
Its where I intended it to be.

Doesn't need to be regulated beyond slapping wrists. It just takes a little self control. Lord forbid a very niche community be a little offputting from the company of a formal dinner setting, or if people want to discuss philosophical details of a specific topic they can make a new thread to do that instead of min maxing their character counts on their replies.

I think warning is better than getting triggerhappy

it doesn't seem like a massive amount, from what i can tell. we have nearly 300,000 members, but it seems like a far smaller amount of those actually make posts and threads. and the most that i've seen on here at a time hasn't gotten above 500 at a single time.
but we do have a warning system in place. if someone is going overboard, they will get a warning and three results in a ban.
i would suggest keeping an eye on those who do seem to jump in and rile everyone up when the conversation was proceeding along a fairly peaceful route. some people will push the boundaries for their own personal fun.

Iโ€™m in trouble then. /j

Xenforo has an ignore feature that hides a user's posts. You could try ignoring users that regularly post like that.

Trust me I do. Unfortunately that does not always work(in the event you ignored someone who was a user and now is more.) Even if you ignore it why would anyone want to make any threads when you could take any 5 threads here and probably find an example of my complaint on all 5? If derailing threads if what you do to boost your post count I'd suggest users get creative and make their own threads that do not derail and pre existing threads could stay on the tracks too. It would be a lot more enjoyable for all involved.

XenForo has a few built-in tools to stop people from engaging in harmful and/or disruptive ways without actually warning or banning them, but I'm always hesitant to take away a person's ability to speak... feels like it'd very well defeat the purpose of a forum.

I'm more the verbal warning kind, but perhaps we should crack down harder on this sort of thing. Who knows.

Do people really just post to boost their post count? Seems pointless to me.

Yes, which if done as intended is not a problem, but at the same time on your metaphorical climb up the stairs you shouldn't shove others down that are doing the same or just trying to have a good time.

Yep, and it's a tale as old as board themselves.

I remember the endless fight to reach "Retro Master" or "Game Master" status on early aughts boards, how mods would delete dozens of pointless posts a day just to prevent people from getting to the top ranks easily... and the funniest part? There were no perks waiting for them at the top! You just had a nice title under your name. It was really pointless, but also kinda fun in unexpected ways, like when the ZDaemon forums hid post counts and then users found out that they could create their own field to diss each other by stretching the "location" field until it showed up as a new one underneath. Profiles saying things like "posts: more than X Member" were a gloriously common occurrence XD

Most of the forums I've been on over the years tended to have a lurk first before joining or posting policy and the userbase would tend to weed out people who obviously didn't lurk first and regularly derailed threads.

I've used other xenforo based forums and having several negative sticker options actually tends to help with posters who regularly derail threads. Most people don't like seeing their little reddit karma score going down.

It would help if users reported this behavior more.
We can delete and warn without issuing a warning point that will put the account at risk.
That should have some effect, if it doesn't points are next.
But all begins with reports if nobody reports users get away with it.
