What's the history and culture around writing guides for games?

I once wrote an entire walkthrough for Army Men: World War - Land, Sea, Air for the PlayStation 1 by placing a typewriter near my TV, because it was THAT frustrating.

No, but I have been an reader of them all the back to the Mynok's Final Fantasy 3 (what FF6 was called in the 90's). Also always loved CyricZ's guides for the Yakuza games.

It was a LONG time ago, but I typed up a guide for FF II offering tips, and other various things I found. I ended up giving it to a friend.

Maybe a game that was recently translated to English?

No, but I'd love to do one someday. Not sure about what, though. I do a Steam review here and there but that's not the same.
