Me and my sister have been having the same problem. have you seen those videos of modded 3Ds and they would have a bunch of games on the home screen.
That is what are 3Ds looks like, and I found it often that I'd say at the home screen more than playing and choose the same 3 games that I always play. I choose a game "lets say Mario and Luigi dream team" I'd defeat 2 or 5 enemies and then exit the game. me and my sister talked about this and realized that years ago when we would have 2 or 3 games that we would always adore and enjoy the few games we had.

(sorry if I'm yapping, but I just wonder if you guys felt the same)

Personally I don't have that problem. Just play whatever you feel like playing, if it happens to be Mario and Luigi Dream Team and you feel like done after killing few enemies then so be it, don't beat yourself up. It's hard to enjoy an activity if you feel like you're forced to do it.

i definitely feel that. i like to have them on my systems just in case i get in the mood for something like say a good pokemon or sonic but yeah sometimes i just wont play a game i downloaded. but surely one day when the power goes out and im HELLA bored maybe possibly ill boot one of them up (i know i wont lol)

I really struggle with this, especially now that I'm older, choice paralysis gets worse, as I feel like I should be doing something productive, even when I'm not working. One of the factors that contributes to this is that I like long, grindy, JRPGs, and it can be really hard to motivate myself to actually sit down and play them these days. Having them all instantly accesible doesn't help either.

A few things that I do to try and mitigate this:

-Create a Backloggd account and make a list of games that I'm currently playing.
-Choose 2/3 of those games and try playing all of them for at least an hour a day.
-Have dedicated devices for certain games (I play all of my Game Boy games on my TrimUI Brick, NES games on my CRT/Wii, etc) I find playing everything on one device makes you get bored faster.

Building a routine helps me mentally to actually get things done. I also find that if you're playing a game with a friend, that can also motivate you as well.

This probably has to do with having multiple games and not knowing which one to play. It's called choice overload or something like that.

Just go ahead and pick a game (don't think too much about which one) and hit play. Start with short play sessions, like 10-15 minutes the first time, until you get more comfortable with longer sessions. Don't force yourself to play a game you genuinely dislike, but do try to not quit immediately.

This should "fix" your issue. If not, then don't bother with gaming for a while. Find other hobbies if you can, and go back to playing games only when you truly want to.

Find series or genres you like and then figure out what is considered the best in that series or genre. It's a good place to start - at least with older systems.

Choice paralysis is real
Go on this site, write all potential choices and go last man standing (musical chairs) with them

Whatever wins is the game you will go with.

This is weird to say on a forum dedicated for playing video games, but why not.. just be productive? Play games when you feel like it? It feels way better after a productive day instead of a day of scrolling through your backlog for something to finish. As much as I like playing video games, I can not think of a situation where I regretted being productive instead of sitting on a pc for the whole day.
Maybe this is just me but I really just try to avoid turning this hobby into a chore and something that I have to force myself to do.

Yeah, that's a common trend. Can be difficult to fight the voice in your head that tells you to be a mindless machine instead of a meaty mammal, especially when the paralysis hits. I'm glad that you have systems that help you combat that, at least.

For myself, I pick three games and send it to a group chat where I ask my friends which game I play. If I decide I don't want to play what they picked, I pick three games again (they don't need to be the same), then ask again. I also tell them my thoughts as I play, so as to help myself process my opinions on it.

Sometimes I purposefully hide/delete games from my home screen to prevent this from occurring, as too many choices can lead to decision paralysis at times for me as well.

I might have a crapton of games installed on my PC, tons of games on the PS1 and more on the PS2, but I probably spend the least amount of time playing them. Most I've done lately was play SVC Chaos on stream in the very few hours of peace I can find, along with some other fighters, but that's the thing, you can beat them fairly quick and move on to the next.

This, too. The fighting game genre (and others like it, such as rhythm and other arcade games) are well-suited to a more pickup and play mentality given their relatively low time commitment per match/game compared to something like a long JRPG.

I can't even imagine having to play a JRPG with my current attention span, LOL. I was playing the TR1-3 remasters but stopped a while ago, I did play Doom 2016 and beat it, but nothing as lenghty ever since. Even RE which I always played here and there, I wasn't really finding the time, or energy to play them. I did beat Original RE4 on Professional but that was what, last year?

Having favorites even when you have a sizeable collection is OK. Playing only some levels/screens/rooms is good too.
I guess what's important is having fun 😁
