PC be like:
am i a joke to you.jpg

Let's say it counts as home gaming.

I'll agree that PC is the best of both worlds. But eh, I actually like a nice little handheld, nothing stupidly overpriced like a Steam Deck. I know it's a handheld, but it's not really conveniently portable.

I don't need to play AAA games when I'm just killing time waiting for an order to show up or in a waiting room just something I can flip on, play for a bit, and toss back in my pocket when I'm done. Something akin to a PSP or Vita in size. So, for me, Handheld.

...goblins...

There are two worlds in the gaming world.
The handheld and the home console, these two couldn't be more different.
Which side are you on or are you for both ???
You decide !!
definitely handhelds for me, i'm so sad with how handhelds are becoming more and more bulky. i should be able to 1. chuck it into my bag without a care 2. put it in my pocket/jacket pocket

I prefer a stationary PC, or a laptop, but for dedicated gaming devices, I think up until before the Switch ruined everything forever, handhelds had their own game catalogues mostly made for themselves, which made them more interesting than home consoles of the post-PS2 era.

Both have their advantages and merits. If you're too partisan about one, you're missing so much of what the other has to offer.

If I was stuck on a desert island with only one choice though... I guess it would have to be home consoles (or PC). You can't beat the available display tech and ergonomics of controllers imo

I'd rather have a console or PC given the choice, as having a large screen and wider control options are very valuable to me. Most handhelds cramp my hands up fairly easily too.

I find myself using portables most of the time when playing single player games. It's just too practical.

There's some stark exceptions though:
- When playing retro games on a CRT
- When playing Smash Ultimate online. I use my PC monitor for that.

In case of computers, I prefer using a laptop over a desktop. I don't have a Steam deck or anything of the sort, though I'd still prefer a non-portable computer for some mouse oriented games such as Hotline Miami 2. (I know this game supports controllers but I prefer the mouse).

I never really liked handheld consoles, although nevertheless as a kid I bought a couple of them, namely the Lynx and the GB. If I had to choose something to play with that is easily transportable I would opt for my Raspberry or an Anbernic model also equipped with hdmi output to play it maybe on a hotel or b&b TV...

For me, PC is the answer. (probably it's counted toward home console)
I have smartphone too, but i feel uncomfortable using it.

Possibly the reason is that most of my experiences is with PC and home consoles like NES and Sega MegaDrive.

I have experience with BrickGame too, which is the only handheld i had.
It was fun! but again, i prefer home consoles...

There's a place for both, but I don't like it when a handheld tries to be a home console. There's so much you can take advantage of with a portable form-factor that you otherwise couldn't with a stationary box. The DS line is perhaps the best example of this with its various features from Pictochat, Streetpass (I miss Streetpass so much) and Download Play. The Switch in comparison, I get what they tried to do in the beginning, but I feel trying to make it the flagship "home console" really compromised it in terms of being a portable console. The elephant in the room is that it may as well be the size of an elephant compared to the DS. And good luck getting the Switch 2 in your pocket because that's even bigger now; you may as well get a Steam Deck for that size and price (it's literally cheaper, lol).

I'm sure there's a lot of people who'll champion for PC over console. But one thing I think you miss on that front is convenience. You don't need to set up a home console in the same way that you set up a PC and you don't need to maintain it as much, either. And as someone who uses a computer for work, I would rather have my PC set-up and dedicated for work. I don't want to waste several gigabytes that I would otherwise have on a Steam library that I barely even play.

I don't even consider consoles that convenient by comparison these days.

Xbox and Playstation have been rolling out games that need updates and day one patches for a few generations now. Storage management is always a concern for game installs. Switch 2 is going to drop game key cards and other convoluted crap.

On the PC side, Valve has made Proton relatively painless regarding setup for compatible games, and SteamOS has brought the 10 foot console interface, removing the need to be in a desktop environment.

It's pretty much all the same crappy experience now, and PC is superior at getting things done.

I mean, AAA games needing constant updates & day one patches isn't a problem that's exclusive to console. Many of these games you complain about are also on PC, mind. Same with storage. I would say, take it as a blessing that Sony & Microsoft haven't taken away the ability to user-upgrade your storage. Yes, AAA games are far too big; that's not a console problem.

Consoles are more convenient because you don't need to worry about drivers, compatibility with certain components or if an automatic update completely breaks something (Windows). If you buy a PS4 game, it will work on a PS4. Everything is unified, is easier and is more compatible as a general entertainment device for your living room.

I would say even the Steam Deck isn't quite as convenient as Xbox/PS as someone who does have a Steam Deck. It has taken massive steps, but it's still lacking in certain areas. Not every game works and while it is technically possible to connect my Logitech G29 to it, I would have to go through a massive headache to get it to work. But I can plug in my G29 into my PS4 & it'll just work instantly.

Nintendo are just Nintendo. They seem to very much like anti-consumer practices.

I don't think one is better than the other since they serve different purposes. Home consoles gave you the most advanced gaming experience, while handheld consoles let you play games on the go.
