Their insistence on the multi-media franchise model makes it hard to get into. If only the games had been better. The anime's had potential, but they are mostly there to tie with the game's stories. Roots is an incomplete story. It was self-inflicted.

At least we got a great soundtrack out of it from Kajura Yuki.

roots is supposed to tie into the game's story. the last 2-3 episodes are covered in the first game's opening, but there are some loose ends that just disappear from existence in the game. Pi had a underling who was supposed to gather intel on some characters who just poofs out of the story and is never mentioned ever again.
you'd think that wouldn't have happen since the animes and games do line up fairly well; especially since they seemed to have planned everything out, but nothing's perfect.
except Pi. Pi is perfect.

That's what I'm saying makes .hack hard to get into. The story being spread across different media isn't that great of an idea.

it should have been more self contained like sign was. it leads into the game but ties up the story it was telling. roots starts up after the first tutorial and leads into the literal next cutscene. i watched the first episode on disc 2 of g.u. that must have been confusing as hell for someone completely new to the series.
