Gundam

I've always wondered what caused "Newtypes" to exist: are they humans who mutated because of cosmic ray exposure? Are they a natural evolution of homo sapiens in a <1G environment? Are they people with psychic abilities a la Akira?

I don't mind newtypes being an hypothetical way of how humans may become when we'll finally go to space but I always felt like Gundam was biased so that we barely see normal humans still being prolific with a mobile suit... you'll have to be gifted to be able to properly navigate in space.
While it does make about as much sense as say the original origin of the Fantastic Four. At it's core, it's just classic science fiction pulp novel bullshit and I just go with it

I think that canonically every newtypes are spacenoids but not all spacenoids can be a newtype.

I'd be curious if, with some science put in, there could be Earthnoid newtypes (I remember that there was an "artificial newtype" in one of the movies).

Way I see it, it's a franchise anyone can get into because everyone had a starter series. It has political intrigue in most of them, much akin to Five Star Stories and it's the opposite of Macross. I can say that much of the earlier ones like OYW, Z, 08MS Team, Stardust Memory, Wing, Turn A, UC and SEED has the most political intrigue you'll ever find in the series. Not into that? You got War in the Pocket, G, Build Fighters, Witch, and throw in the manga if you find some. It's okay if you add Compati Hero in there. Hell, I'm rather I'm into SRW since it does tie up some loose parts that never got explained or just most if not all of the franchise a breather from being always serious. I mean I grew up on mecha so I was gonna reach Gundam eventually, I grew up on Golion, Macross, Bismarck, and Tekkaman Blade which I suppose is a blessing because not many people don't know that much as far as mecha goes.

Oh lord what have I gotten myself into? Not only are there a bunch of animes to watch, but there's a ton of mangas that never got anime adaptations! Now I need to find a complete list of these mangas... (someone help)

Edit- OMFG THERE'S LIKE A MILLION MANGAS I'LL NEED TWO LIFETIMES FOR THIS SERIES

The manga adaptations and Origins are all garbage, you really should watch all the Grandpa + Z + ZZ TV trilogy in all their ancient campy glory. You really can't fully appreciate Gundam until you watch the UC animes.

I watched SEED with some friends on Discord. It's "so corny its good" type of show.

It was fun but Kira having zero personality really got on my nerves

Kira does have a personality, He's just kinda shy and conflicted esp with his best friend being on the side he's fighting against and him being a coordinator on the side that's opposing him, at least in the first show.

It's more of a spiritual or philosophical sorta thing, at least in how it was presented in 0079, but as UC went on it's more about people who just more adapted in space than others. Like what if people become more adapted to space than they would be on earth, that sorta deal. Though as UC went on that just became a natural thing for everyone that after a point it's not that huge of a deal and just a natural evolution for people and when you reach turn a, Newtypes are just a thing of the past and aren't a huge deal.

Xabungle and Turn A Gundam are not related, they are there own works.
Space Runaway Ideon is also its own thing. Tho they are both very good and would recommend both to anyone interested in the earlier Gundam works.
Pretty much anyone who likes gundam I think owes to seek out other shows sunrise made and esp the people who worked on the shows. Tomino's anime is some of the best and most important/unique found in any anime. Excluding Gundam, I think his all time best is Space Runaway Ideon, but I also love Brain Powerd as well.

Being a Tokusastu fan Gundam tended to fly around the toku spaces I'm in so on a whim i decided to watch it i started with the original TV series not the movies i didn't expect to like it very much. Boy was i wrong i was quickly hooked it had action banging music drama and giant robots what was not to like i quickly watched the follow up Zeta Gundam and what a sequel it was whereas most anime continuations tend to be reboots or only have a thin connection to the original Zeta brings back the cast of the original and introduces a new one almost seamlessly. and takes the simple conflict of the original turns it on it's head molds it into a complex philosophical political drama unlike any other. been a fan since ive seen
ZZ
War in the Pocket
08th MS Team
F91
Victory
Turn A
Seed
Unicorn
Age
Build Fighters

Although they play a import part in the UC Gundams, the origin of Newtypes are kept vague. I think we gotta understand that Gundam is a anime from the 70s made by people who had experienced war (or the effects of one), witness a rapid growth in technology, the Moon landing and the social unrest and countercuture movements in the 60's.

I do think Newtypes were some sort of new age thing that was prevalent at that time. Mankind's innate potential to our next step in evolution weaponized to serve stubborn old men that refuse change (the Earth Federation) or to justify supremacy ideals that only generate more war (the Zabis and the Principality of Zeon).

I think Newtype's origins should remain vague. I would prefer to avoid another "i was the midichlorians" situation.

If it is any help, most Gundam-related manga aren't THAT important to understand the main story (at least for UC Gundam). They do expand the lore and sometimes fill the gaps and give more context (e.g. why Haman is so defiant and petty towards Char)

Space Runaway Ideon show in the manga version Victory Gundam
Space Runaway Ideon is also its own thing.

Ackchyually, Ideon is proto-Neon Genesis Evangelion 🤓☝️

I could see that humanity will ultimately evolve if they continue to go in space.

And Megaranger (aka Power Rangers in Space in the west) is totally like Gundam with the Robot being actually fighting in outer space.

I totally agree on that.

Only gundam I watched is Gundam build fighters, Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin.

I want to watch more but my god having to watch them in correct order and then the damn amount of it. And honestly I always been weak to anime´s that are sad or depressing and with age I become even weaker to the point I 100% avoid anime´s that are way to say. I know from experience Gundam has some very dark shit and even some very depressing moments.

So a part of me wanna watch more because I love Mech´s anime while another part is more like NOPE to much shows and no I don´t wanna feel sad.

You can just go from the first show up to ZZ and Char's counterattack and you'll be fine and get the basic gist of what Gundam was for the main stuff of what it is. The rest of the alt universes are fine to jump into as long as you know what interests you and do enough research.

I'll say not all of Gundam is heavy or depressing, they usually have something hopeful or optimistic even in the heaviest shows like Victory.

actually they are both diet zambot 3 :^)

Mobile Suit Gundam and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam have been shortened to 3 movies each and are kinda the definitive way of watching em. so that makes it alot easier to get through. The Zeta Gundam movies are especily good tho the additional animation being some of the best the franchise has to offer can be a bit jarring next to the original animation.
The OG gundam is indeed best watched as the three movies, but the new translation trilogy is a terrible way to watch Zeta for the first time. It also retcons ZZ and CCA, and the further sequels after that.

The new animation is great and I'd honestly prefer if they remade the series that way and removed the few episodes where not much happens. The biggest sin of a new translation though, is easily the removal of Chars UN speech. This is easily Chars most character building moment and they took it out. They are enjoyable, but more so for a quick rewatch of Zeta as you have the context that the trilogy is missing.

New Translation pisses me off personally, because a Re-made version of Zeta with modern animation by tomino would've been the shit, Zeta is my personal favorite of the UC shows barring victory.

but it's such a disjointed mess of old and new footage that even the changes made to the story don't feel well earned.

I think it's one of the few bad points in gundam's history.

Tomino clearly looks back on Zeta like he made a lot of mistakes with it because he was at his worst when it came to the depression the guy seems to have suffered from quite badly at the time. Ironically, barring some pacing issues due to the episode count being around 50, it is easily the most well written of all of UC Gundam. War in the pocket is apparently at least this good or better, but I've yet to see it. I've burnt out on Gundam as a premise, so I never got around to watching it. I'd imagine with new translation Tomino set out to "fix" the original series. Mid 2000's Tomino isn't the same man as mid 80's Tomino.

For me personally, CCA was a massive let-down after zeta and even double zeta, while a light hearted show, the last ten episodes matched Zeta quite well in tone.

CCA is very well animated, the general plot of the asteroid isn't bad and the mech designs are sublime, the character designer was different, but I find that CCA is just not as well written as Zeta, OG gundam or even ZZ episodes 40 onwards. Especially when it comes to character arcs, Tomino just can't write consistent fleshed out characters within a script for a feature length film. They're all quite one note compared to literally any full series he did.
