I had a discussion with a friend recently about different unlockables in video games. For example Resident Evil was a part of the discussion. "Remember tofu?" was a question that made us both laugh a lot, and that inspired me to make this post!

Do you like characters or mechanics in video game, that are meant to be kinda goofy or straight up jokes? They don´t need to be unlockable to qualify!

I love these. Video games should be fun, so why not add something like this to them? Escpecially when they are optional. Tofu Survivor from RE2 is amazing even though it´s the hardest thing you can do in the game, and for example the infinite ammo cat ears from RE4 Remake from beating Pro on S+ rank are just dumb enough to be kinda funny, but their function is the best part!

On the fighting game front I´ve always loved Roger/ Roger Jr, the kangaroo fighter from Tekken, and Lizardman from Soul Calibur series. They are just dumb enough that something draws me to them! Or maybe it´s just my furry side talking::thinking

I did not have too many examples, so feel free to tell me your favourites that you can think of! ::winkfelix

Yay!

I thought that Magilou was going to be nothing but a joke character throughout all of Tales of Berseria but I'm glad that she showed a more mature side at times, especially late in the game

As long as it's optional, why not have it? I never played as Tofu in RE2, but I love the idea that hardcore players could use that character. It show that the devs cared about their game.

Yes, it's one of my favorite thing ever, even better if the character has a unique quirk that no other characters has, like Akuma in Tekken, or many weird units from SRW.

I love that kind of stuff, but it never seems to happen anymore. Maybe because social media and the internet eliminated the "surprise" factor.

To be fair, game magazines in the 90's and 2000's often spoiled those secrets. I wouldn't be surprised that many people wouldn't even be aware of them with the coverage.

I enjoyed seeing Lookalike items in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games. Picking up a Reviser Seed for the first time, thinking it was a Reviver Seed is a fond memory of mine.

The game auto revives you if you faint while carrying a normal Reviver Seed in your bag. But lookalike items have similar names that do not do the intended effect that you expect. So for Reviser Seeds, the game auto revives you as you'd expect, only for the user to then faint anyways from your character laughing too hard. Lookalike items are very goofy, but they are useful in teaching players to pay closer attention to their inventory.
