I've been a big FF fan for a bit now, but never delved into KH, and I wanted to livestream something new. I'm just wondering if there's anything helpful I should know going in, or any details that won't be made explicitly clear... I also started maining Sora and Cloud in Smash Ultimate.

Many thanks in advance. <3

If you want to actually engage with the mechanics, play on the proud or critical difficulty.
Otherwise, play on Standard and attempt to beat all of the secret bosses!

The decisions at the start of the game have an affect on your character progression too. Search online if you want to know what those affects are.

It's fuzzy because it's been 20 years and it may be different depending on which version (idk if every KH1 release is the same) but I recall that
the drop charts change for enemies once you reach a certain point? I remember trying to farm some material for a weapon for Donald and getting to it too late to do it as easily as I might've earlier in the game.

i'll make a mental note, thank you!

KH1 is very platforming centric and not quite focused on combat as much as world exploration. It will probably have what is closest to a "traditional" Disney story.
KH2 should not be played until you either play or watch a synopsis (which is advised depending on your tolerance for a lot of headaches) of Chain of Memories. Even though it is a "spin-off", it is very important plot-wise. This will be a running theme with the non-numbered games.
KH2 is very combat oriented and should absolutely be played on the highest difficulty for maximum enjoyment. The story starts to delve into some really chuuni cringe, but it's somewhat emblematic for the 2006-7 timeframe the game was released in.
If you enjoyed those games and want more story, then you can move onto the others, but 1 and 2 are the absolute pinnacle of the series by far. Good luck and enjoy!

Use the tutorial fights against wakka, tidus, and selphie at the beginning of the game to practice parrying melee attacks and projectiles. Not that you'll be doing this constantly through the game, but there are some notorious boss fights later in the game that are very difficult if you've never interacted with the parry mechanic

Yes he is beatable. It's possible. I think the first game is pretty straightforward but afterword you will need notes to remember how everything connects. Remember to go to Chain of Memories before to KH2 it's not required as KH2 does fill in most of the blanks but the remaster over the GBA was an upgrade I didn't know I needed when dealing with the overworld. It gets more fun the further you get in and after mastering the combat in just about every title. I believe whole heartedly that 358/2 Days was the most wasted time of my life spent and you should skip it and just find a movie or cutscene only vid if you want the full story.

(KH1) Dont sleep on summons, especially bambi and tinkerbell. Beatable without them but it'll give you a winning edge

Right off the bat: Proud Mode isn't recommended. There's no credos you're missing out on by playing Normal Mode over it. Difficulty as preference doesn't become a deterministic factor until KH2:FM

To add to this: there's no reason to stick to the original release when Final Mix is an option, unless you're wanting some absolutely vanilla perspective on things. Will not fault you if you prefer vanilla designs over Final Mix ones, but there's mods for that.

For information that's vague enough to only work when you've the context to understand it:
- The questions they ask pertain to rate of experience gained and where it plateaus. The threshold is always level 40.
- If you can't pick: take the shield. Only take the Rod either after your first playthrough, or if you're feeling ballsy.
- Just because you gain the ability to guard only after leveling up doesn't mean you're without defensive options. Almost every enemy has reaction states that interact with your common attack more than you realize.
- Bat Wakka his ball back. It's rude not to.
- No matter how many tricks Riku might get, his fighting style'll remain the same.
- You can beat every forced-to-lose combat encounter. You don't get anything but bragging rights via consumables.
- Don't head down when you get the ship.
- Your companions suck at managing potions. It'll pay off later to get used to menu cataloguing. Feel free to keep them stocked if you don't mind expending a fair bit more in the long run.
- The same as your basic attack, magic can also influence or manipulate reaction states out of enemies. Don't go thinking its only use is for healing.
- In a polka dot maze, check for a green bell.

There's other things to say, but it's better not to steal all the mystery. Hope you have fun with the game! If you're ever stuck, just rely on yourself for a bit longer, or ask in this thread before just perusing online!

Don't mind too much of the "cringe" that it could have with that naive yet interesting premise about hearts.

Personally I'm a bit sad that the Final Fantasy part of KH is way less shown than Disney (which I appreciate but am not a big fan of).

So yeah, the overall story may be confusing (especially when the lesser episodes, almost spinoff like, are important to understand the mainline games) but you can still understand the game's.

dont sweat it that much, you will see many anime tropes, but just enjoy overall the games, have fun, if you don't care for the story that much, just play them on whatever story order you like (y)
