It's moving forward! GE Recomp Update! GoldenEye: Recompiled ~ Apr 24, 2025

Some of the same people who brought us those amazing recompiled PC ports of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, and even recently Star Fox 64 are now working on the Goldeneye PC port that I was just told existed in another thread I posted about being sad that TimeSplitters is dead.

amazing news for all us old folks who played too many video games that ran at 4 FPS AND LOVED IT
Here's a Twitter link with video footage of their current work in progress:

I love hearing news about N64 games getting recomps because N64 emulation is so behind compared to other consoles that people are just jumping forward to running the games natively on computer hardware. It is kind of funny to me that this has happened. But what are you to do?::cirnoshrug The N64 had such unique code to it that if we can't find out how to emulate it well, we might as well go the extra step and port the games. I'll totally download this when the project is complete.

I agree, I’ve developed less favorable opinions of n64 emulation as time went on, and started to prefer options like these over emulation.

I heard a lot of roms and console games getting recompile lately.
Well this work is so hard in some consoles. You have a lot of works to do and need knowing coding too.
They've probably been working on it since 1997

Here's hoping they add splitscreen co-op. It's the only thing the game is missing in my opinion.

And considering Perfect Dark has it, as well as the entire TimeSplitters franchise, I think it's safe to say the creators thought so too.

If we got a vita port, I'd be chuffed. Someone please do it!! I played this to death on the N64 as a kid.

Wow. Does that mean the game is gonna be significantly less ass than it was back then?
I can assure you that on release, it was a crowning glory, actual objectives and a realistic level layout. Up to that point we mostly got doom style shooters, mostly from something id related too and fan made campaigns and such. Go get key, navigate maze to door, shoot some flat images with three frames, rinse and repeat. Yes the framerate has issues in goldeneye, but I'll take that over anything id was doing at the time. Half life was a turning point, but only if you realise that it built on goldeneye.

Goldeneye really does not get enough praise for its campaign, only it's multiplayer, same for the halo games, 1-3, the campaign is overlooked in favour of people playing digital paintball with each other, especially the care and attention to detail put into those campaigns.

Very cool, I've never played Goldeneye (and the TimeSplitters series), but with this game now getting a recompilation, I'll play it in the future.

Nice to see that, I've already done the game through 1964 GEPD with the mouse injector and the XBLA port on Xenia Canary but I'll probably do that one if I get in the mood again.

I'm surprised because I thought that older players were more tolerant on older games and honestly I can still manage on the N64 hardware (like Mario 64 and F-zero X).

Emulation makes it a bit more bearable though.

I'll assume you were born after the game or didn't play back then but it's the game that changed the FPS genre from being just Doom and Quake clone to actual, objective based gameplay with enemies that react more naturally as well as having a more realistic level design. Goldeneye was quite the big advancement for the genre next to Half-Life and even Unreal to a lesser extent.

with how thorough GameCube emulation and other ins and outs of it is already is, I'm still really just hoping TimeSplitters will one day follow for a recomp or something even more thorough. we'd already gotten some equally dedicated people jump a generation ahead with Sonic Unleashed after all.
as for Goldeneye itself, i've still got the mouse injector hack sitting around so i'd be curious if this new endeavour will have any extra niceties to set it apart besides ease of launch

A lot of people really do seem to dislike it from a technical standpoint, which is understandable because it is a rough experience to go back to, but everyone is correct in how innovative it was for it's mission based design.

The higher the difficulty, the more involved the levels were. I'd say you were only experiencing a third of the game if you just played on Normal or Easy.

Some of it is actually closer to how the Hitman games play out than something like Doom.

Agreed, I used to exclusively play the game in Agent difficulty because I felt like I was bad at the game until I got curious and how Secret/00 Agent are making you more strategical (even some missions are made to be done out of order to have the best route for the cheat code unlock).

Unlocking the cheat codes was the ultimate challenge of the game (next to completing Egypt in 00 Agent) and gave a massive replay value (next to Multiplayer).

I don’t know what gave that impression. I thought I was explicit in my wording that I prefer real n64 hardware over emulation, and not that I dislike n64 itself or old games for that matter. I think you’ve reversed what I said.

It just means now YouTubers can do epic Randomizer runs where the awful feeling gun that USED to be on the ground in this level is replaced with a different awful feeling gun that wasn't there before. Whooooa.

Here's a Twitter link with video footage of their current work in progress: I enjoy love games for their creativity and emotional depth. Supporting Timmins, ON Local Businesses that sell board games and romantic card games adds a special touch, making date nights more meaningful while strengthening our community at the same time.
I’m excited about GoldenEye Recompiled In The Works. Revisiting such an iconic game with modern enhancements is thrilling. It’s a great way to honor nostalgia while introducing it to new players. I can’t wait to see the improvements unfold!
