So I have a psp but I'm thinking I I should upgrade to a psvita. but there's on problem my psp I modded so I don't know I could trade it in for cash at a retro game store
and is it even worth getting one if a psvita if I already have a psp? (I cant play M rated games like gta so idk if that effects any thing)

It depends, if you wanted a handheld that can emulate some games better, you can pick the Vita
But if it's something you can't let go, then you can keep your PSP

Some PS Vita memory cards are quite expensive in some country so, be careful with any store

If you're willing to mod the Vita (it's free and easy, look for a guide), then it's worth it for sure. From there, just get yourself a cheap Vita2SD adapter to sidestep the expensive proprietary memory cards entirely. Adrenaline is a homebrew that lets you play all your PSP/PS1 stuff on the Vita, so you don't really miss anything.

it honestly kind of comes down to you and your taste in games. they have a pretty similar quantity of games (Vita has about a couple hundred more), and it also comes down to the trends in gaming around their eras. the PSP was pretty experimental, as it was the first time studios were able to play around with that kind of power in such a small form factor, but they also had to account for a bunch of things, like pick up and go gameplay or an entire missing joystick.

PSP games will probably have less polish overall than Vita games, but I'm just assuming that, as I'm not very familiar with the Vita (I played Gravity Rush YEARS ago and I remember it being pretty cool). There are a lot of really good games in the PSP's library though, especially if you like RPGs or visual novels.

i have a pstv and a psp
i prefer the psp, far more easy to hack, and too few exclusive games that worth it on vita imo
but what if I mod a psvita (if is get it) does that change any thing?
and I have a ps2 so I don't know about the pstv thing.

pstv is just a vita but without screen and connected to a TV
Sure, you can mod a vita -no point of getting one and not modding it- but things are just *more complicated in general*
storage cost more, you need plugins for games, for using sd cards as storage...plus your firmware must be a certain version or you have to downgrade first for jailbreak
and imo the 3 games worth it on a vita dont justify buying and going through the hassle of jailbreaking one
psp is just put a file on your sd card, jailbreak and just go

It's up to you. If you are interested in some vita games or want to play some PS4 ports plus the psp games It's great. But if you are Interested only in the psp games then you are not loosing too much. In my case I got both but only use the vita 👍

I have a few PSP's and a Vita and i can tell you both are awesome in their own right. I believe you should keep your PSP, with it modded you can play PS1 games too. Obviously a modded Vita (wich is easy to do nowadays) can play all that via Adrenaline, but due to the resolution differentes, PS1 games and PSP games wont look so good on the Vita screen. Besides that, Vita has some great titles, like Uncharted, and lets not forget there are some amazing ports that run perfectly on the Vita, like the GTA Series, Bully, Max Payne, etc.

So i do think if you can find a Vita for a good price, you should get one and keep both consoles.

Also, if you can you should copy all your psp stuff somewhere (a pc, for example), and then you can paste it back in the memory card/micro sd in the modded psvita when you install Adrenaline, so you get all the old stuff from your psp plus all the new stuff for the vita :) If not going to mod psvita, if you find cheap copies of games you want to play I believe it't worth the purchase of the console, psvita has many wonderful titles!

Definitely keep the PSP and maybe pick up a Vita later in addition when time/money is right.

I have been wanting a Vita forever but I always end up deciding that my PSP gives me plenty already and I can't justify the expense of a Vita for what little I would gain. There are some games on Vita that I want to play eventually. Some day I'll get one.

i'll be honest, at this point your better off if you want a upgraded handheld to either go the steam deck route or get something like a retroid pocket, the vita as much as the system is underrated, is way past it's expiration date in worth of owning for normal gamers.

personally, i have both a PSP and a PSVita, i ended up getting a PSP 3000 because PSP and PS1 games don't look that good on the PSVita, they render at their native resolutions and then it just gets stretched to fit fit PSVita screen, it's playable, put the loss in image quality is baffling (specially in 3D games, on pixel art games like FF1 to 4 you basically can't tell the difference), that's why i keep using my PSP for PSP games when i don't just emulate them on my Deck, although on the vita, you can use adrenaline to use the second joystick of the console as a dpad, so some games like Monster Hunter play WAAAY better on it, due to basically play like modern MH, no clutch claw grip breaking your hand in order to move the camera and the character at the same time, so you lose some, but you gain some.
PSVita is a great handheld, specially if you mod it you can bypass completely the crappy proprietary memory cards using a small adapter called SD2Vita (uses the game cartridge slot, there is a variant for the 3G models of the PSVita 1000 that replaced the sim module for an SD card one), overall in terms of options and potential the Vita es way better than the PSP, but it has some drawbacks like the ones i mentioned at the beginning.
Now, on this day and age, you have 100$ devices like the retroids capable of so much more, you're looking for raw power at low cost, that would be the way to go, that, or a Steam Deck, another option that comes to mind is getting a Nintendo Switch, and modding it, but that's a complete different world because you can only softmod the first models of the switch, personally for my Switch i had to solder a modchip, which can be expensive (i did it myself because i have tools and the experience), a Switch has emulators for basically everything nowdays, the scene still going strong on it, and in fact you can even install linux and use it as a PC, or android and use it to play smartphone and PC games natively with varied degrees of success, there's some videos around where people play WoW on the Switch.
If you can afford it i would tell you to get a Steam Deck and fill it with a bunch of emulators, it's a powerhouse, from NES to WiiU, from PS1 to PS3, very few games will have trouble running on the Deck.
But yeah, unless YOU REALLY WANT A VITA, i wouldn't get one today, comes with a bunch of compromises, at around 100$ you can get a used nintendo switch for the same price or a bit more, and do so much more with it, moreover, the vita is out of production, so spare parts are even more rare by the day, soon it will be hard to fix any fault with it, unlike the PSP i don't see the movement in looking for replacement solutions like the screen kits for the PSP 1000 and 2000 models... the more worry inducing part is the battery, those die, and i unless you decide to do some redneck modding using a smartphone battery replacing the original one could be a nightmare soon...
I love the vita, it's been my favorite portable system since i got one 6 years ago, but i have to admit, that in this day and age, has some compromises you might not be able or willing to do, specially if you have a money tight situation as it seems in your case, and looking at the current portable landscape i would keep the PSP, and save for a Steam Deck, since that's probably the best bang for buck you can find right now, with the refurbished sales Steam often does, grabbing an led or oled 512gb model or the lowest possible storage model and then upgrading to a 1 or 2 TB SSD would be the thing, i think.

thanks for the brain dump of information, I'll look into getting a steam deck or alternatives.::rofl

I have both systems but I prefer Vita but the best way to experience psp is emulation.

I had a PSP, I have a PSTV, all I can say is "don't get a PSTV it's not worth it at all". The Vita's probably better, but if you already have a PSP you're 95% set. There's some worthwhile Vita titles, but nothing to specifically buy it over if you already have a PSP imo

if you really want a newer handheld to play Vita stuff, Steam Deck + Vita3K tbh

I've got the PSVita, the PSTV and the PSP...

The limited list of games on the PSTV can be extended with a mod but you cannot get tactile supporton it. So, if the games you want play use tactile controls, then don't get the PSTV (i.e.: Tearaway).

Then, unless you actually want to play a specific game on the Vita, I suggest you don't get one. (Keep reading, though).

For what is worth, you can get newer hardware that can emulate almost anything you may want and it's just as expensive as a used Vita.

And there's definitely less expensive quality controllers for an Android phone, where you can emulate even other (even bigger) consoles, but that requires your phone to have some specs (my Snapdragon 860 powered phone can play lots of stuff). Now, hear me out: don't buy a phone to emulate stuff, I would suggest it's better to check if yours already has enough juice for it (check for vita compatibility first, maybe).

Then... If none of these options click with you, maybe save for a Vita, instead of trading it in. They would pay you a low price for it anyways.

Let us know what you decided 🙂
